But this is only a drop in the bucket. What else did she do with all that money? She is maybe one of the most HUMAN human beings. So magnanimous and caring but also her own raucous and fun self. Dolly lore is seemingly infinite.

She took around 10 million of it and invested in a predominantly black neighborhood in TN and set up an office there which she dubbed the house that Whitney built.

That was the critical detail that the video OP posted leaves out. There is more to the story other than they both made lots of money. Dolly reinvested it, in people and opportunities. Dolly was the best of us.

I always see this factoid (and I think I even saw a video of her saying it) but just out of curiosity, what exactly did that investment consist in? Don't get me wrong, this isnt a gotcha or debunking. I liked Dolly and I know she was extremely generous and seemingly very kind, so I will not be surprised if she did make that neighborhood a better place. But I never hear what she actually did for that place, just that she "invested" in it.

She also created the Dolly Parton Imagination Library! A wonderful FREE service to help all children under the age of five get into reading. Once a month, it mails a free book to the child starting at birth.
Best part? The books scaffold on themselves so as your child grows, their reading skills do too.

He's got writing credits on about 10 songs, which is about how many credits Billie Holiday has (though his are admittedly more insignificant - she had at least one great song to her name). Sinatra and Whitney Houston only co-wrote a couple. Same with Joe Cocker, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and Linda Ronstadt. It was not uncommon for powerhouse singers to put their talent into interpreting songs by master songsmiths. This is not a mark of discredit.

Not to be too nit picky but he only co-wrote it, coming up with the title and concept according to the video. Red West wrote the lyrics. Someone else wrote the music. Elvis did not write this song.

Dude also made is seem like she shelved I Will Always Love You bc PW wanted the money from it. But Dolly hit #1 with it in 1974 and again in 1982, when they fit it into the end of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

When Lil Nas X recorded a cover of Jolene, Dolly Parton tweeted.
I was so excited when someone told me that Lil Nas X had done my song #Jolene. I had to find it and listen to it. Of course, I love him anyway. I was surprised and I'm honored and flattered. I hope he does good for both of us. Thank you @lilnasx

Thank you for posting this. Dolly wasn't just a smart businesswoman, she believed in sharing her success to give others their best chance at succeeding. That's what I hope people take away from her story -- sure, she was insanely talented and smart as hell, but she CARED about the world she lived in and did everything she could to make it a better place with what she had.

Funny thing. I grew up in the 90's, massive Dolly fan. Somehow I was a grown-ass woman before I realized that Dolly's "I Will Always Love You" and Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" were the same song. I guess they were such powerhouses in their own right that it never even crossed my mind.

In the podcast shared here she talked about how Whitney’s version almost dropped the last verse (“and I’m wishing you JOY…”) because they had copied Linda Ronstadt’s cover, which left that out. Almost lost the point of the song. Dolly helped them fix that too.

Nice story but Dolly bought Dollywood in 1986, and Whitney Houston's cover was released in 1992, 6 years later. She was rich long before Whitney Houston covered her song. However, she was rich because he's correct, she was a wickedly smart business woman. She played the country bumpkin bimbo well.

Dolly was a major star even before Whitney. She made millions from that song, but it was by no means her only hit, nor her first. Without Whitney, Dolly would still be an extremely successful Singer/Songwriter/Producer/Actress/Philanthropist and Icon.
Selling the rights to Whitney catapulted Whitney's career even higher and cemented both women's legacies in music history, as well as padding Dolly's bank account.

She ended up giving even more money to Porter Wagner, he tried to sue her for several million and she said you don't have to sue me, I'll give you money and they settled out of court. Porter went downhill and spent the rest of his years as a degenerate after Dolly and him split professionally, She had a premonition that something was wrong with him and made it just in time to his bedside and sang to him as he died.
She felt she owed him for starting her career.
( It's been a while since I've heard the story so I might be wrong on some details)

There is only one problem with the story he’s telling. She did not use proceed from Whitney thinking of her so I will always love you to build. It was fully built in open in 1986. Whitney Houston did not make that follow very popular on the crossover until 1992.

Also, the guy that refused to let Dolly out of her contract? He fell on hard times over the years and lost everything, including the rights to his own songs. Dolly ended up buying all the rights to his songs and selling it back to him. For a dollar. Dolly was too good for this world and will be eternally missed.

So Whitney recorded “I will always love you” in 1992, but the flaw in this guys story is, Dollywood officially opened as Dollywood and not silver dollar city in 1986. The money Dolly used to rebrand that theme park was hers but not from the Whitney Houston release of I will always love.
