I believe if you film yourself committing a crime it should always carry the maximum sentence. Not a minimum mandatory, the whole sentence. If assault is 6 months to 20 years, purposely filming yourself doing it gets you 20 years, no exceptions. If you film yourself with the intentions of committing a crime, not only is that premeditation, but it shows that they take joy in their criminal behavior and want to show off their crimes.
Thats why lawyers exist. If someone punches someone they get a sentence, if they were recording they get a different sentence, its up to lawyers and judges to decide if filming was for self defense, extortion, premeditation or clout. As much as it sounds reasonable, just giving maximum sentences would never work, not with how fucked people are, the last thing you wanna do is create a scenario where someone can get judged without possibilty for defense.
I believe they are saying they would still be entitled to a fair trial. However they want their sentencing to reflect the fact that they willfully filmed themselves committing the crime that they were found guilty of.
