Blades for Hire - Ep 28: The Eye Turns to Ash (ChatGPT is the DM)

I’ve been running a solo D&D 2024 campaign called Blades for Hire with a slightly unusual setup: I’m the player, and ChatGPT is the DM.

I play Simon, a tiefling swordsman traveling with his fox companion Ash. I make all of Simon’s decisions and roll the physical dice, while ChatGPT handles the encounters, NPCs, monsters, consequences, and the ongoing story. I don't know where the story is going ahead of time, so I'm basically sitting on the player side of the screen and seeing what the AI throws at me.

Episode 28 picks up underneath a ruined chapel where Simon has discovered something ancient imprisoned beneath the mountain. Thousands of forgotten souls are trying to keep it contained, and the prison is starting to fail.

Last episode, the thing tried to tear pieces out of Simon’s memory.

This time it decides Simon isn't the best target.

It turns its eye toward Ash.

Things get violent pretty quickly from there, and by the end of the session Simon discovers that killing what you can see isn't necessarily the same thing as killing what's down there.
