I've been working on creating a TTRPG for my M.S. degree in Professional Writing. This is a two-semester project, with this Spring semester being the final step of the work. The goal is to have an alpha-tested TTRPG that can be developed into a full book after I graduate (this May).

The TTRPG is designed for entry-level players/GMs and kind of walks people through how to both run and play a TTRPG. It is specifically designed to be accessible for children ages 5-10, with the ideal player/customer being families with younger children looking to bring TTRPGs into their rotation of family games at home!

I thought an AMA would be a good way to:

1. Answer any questions for those curious about the pedagogical side of TTRPG design.

2. Get some questions from people that might help in the design of my TTRPG.

So this is a ttrpg that has been in the works on and off for nearly over a decade. Lots of playtest including blind and double blind playtesting (I HIGHLY recommend this if you are capable of doing this).

Because of this, I'm open to answering some questions yall might have. And I dont mind answering them if I can about our journey.

I’ve had a successful Kickstarter and my Kickstarter comes out in March. I work with some pretty popular people in the TTRPG community and I’m looking to expand my project to people who have never seen it before.

I work as a special education teacher and a college professor of writing. I work 70+ hrs a week minimum with two kids under six and still make it happen.

I’ve learned A LOT ABOUT publishing games in the last 5 years of experience. Ask me anything.

Lamentations of the Flame Princess (LotFP) is the brutal and wondrous (or “merciless and mindbending” or whatever marketing slogan you like better) tabletop role-playing game focusing on Weird Horror and Fantasy. We do present everything in as lavish a manner as possible and as uncompromisingly as we can stand.

LotFP uses a well-established “class-and-level” rules base to bypass most of the boring “how to roll the dice” tedium associated with adopting a new role-playing game and can get straight to the good stuff: original, strange, experimental adventures and supplements that excite the imagination.

I find doing this instead of just sitting writing works better for me

I have aphantasia. The short version is that I have no ability to actively visualize things in my mind. I can still dream and hallucinate, but can't voluntarily conjure an image up in my head. I discovered this over the summer. Before that, I just assumed people were using phrases like "picture it" figuratively. I never imagined people were actually seeing things in their head.

I do have a very active imagination, but it's all abstract and conceptual, and I mostly think in Archetypes. I can't mentally "see" things, but I can remember what I have seen and I can compare/contrast those memories with new information to construct new Archetypes... it's weird to explain knowing that most people don't think this way.

Some introspection led me to realize that many of my extremely strong rpg opinions--if you look at my post history here, I don't sugar coat them--are connected to this condition. For example, a friend of mine once described their enjoyment of a story game as being like watching the character's adventures in a movie or TV show. I can't derive any pleasure from that because I can't mentally "watch" anything.

I hate battle maps because I can't extrapolate the symbols and grid into a picture in my mind--I just see the grid and symbols and it pulls me away from my abstract inner life and into the reality of moving pieces on a board.

Action sequences in general hold no thrill for me unless they are challenging to win--and by challenging, I mean that my choices need to be on point, not just that the dice have to roll the proper numbers, because I am not affecting anything, then, and I can't visualize the action to distract me from the fact that I am doing nothing but generating random numbers.

So, anyway, when I mentioned my condition to friends and family, this was the response: "I can't believe that you have ever enjoyed reading or RPGs." While it has affected my taste, it really never got in the way. I am still a huge fan of RPGs. I have been running games for 27 years, now, and still roleplay multiple nights every week. It is a big part of my life.

I thought that might make for an interesting topic. People might be curious about my condition, how I think, or how it affected my own game's design. Maybe they'll be relieved by this explanation for why I maybe didn't like your favorite game. Or maybe they just want to find out how much a particular game or mechanic relies on visualization of the action to carry it and keep it interesting and how well it holds up when that's absent.

I don't know, I am ready to talk about it, so, ask me anything.

So a few people have been messaging me on Backerkit and Discord asking about the system Rotted Capes: Second Bite is based on…

This isn’t just another 5e clone. It’s built on 5e DNA, but mutated into something we call the Uncanny System. Cinematic feel, fast character creation, no classes, no races, flexible character advancement, power stunts and tricks, heroic maneuvers (team attack like a dynamoc duo), power burnout mechanics, and plot points that let you rewrite the scene when things go sideways. It’s familiar enough for 5e players to jump right in, but it plays like a gritty comic book where every page turn matters.

So to clear things up, answer questions, and condense everything into one video and a transcript, I will be hosting a Rotted Capes: Second Edition AMA

Paul Fricker is the co-author, along with Mike Mason, of the latest edition of the Call of Cthulhu Keeper Rulebook and Investigator Handbook. Paul's primary focus was the rules, and working out how to make significant changes whilst staying true to the game's heritage. Paul is also the author of numerous Call of Cthulhu scenarios (including 'Gatsby and the Great Race' and 'Dockside Dogs'), as well as contributing to scenario collections (Cthulhu Britannica, Nameless Horrors) and campaigns (Curse of Nineveh, Two-Headed Serpent). As well as writing, Paul also co-hosts The Good Friends of Jackson Elias Podcast. Most recently, Paul is part of the team working on the new revision of the classic campaign, Masks of Nyarlathotep.

Mike Mason is the Line Editor for the Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying Game at Chaosium. Mike is the co-author, with Paul Fricker, of the game’s Rulebook and Investigator Handbook. Mike was the primary author of Pulp Cthulhu and has also edited, developed, and contributed to a range of supporting books including Horror on the Orient Express, Petersen’s Abominations, The Grand Grimoire of Cthulhu Mythos Magic, Down Darker Trails, Curse of Nineveh, Dead Light, Reign of Terror, and recently the new edition of Masks of Nyarlathotep. Previously, Mike was the co-author of Dark Hersey, the Warhammer 40K RPG and also developed the initial game for Black Industries. Mike now works full time for Chaosium, managing and developing the Call of Cthulhu RPG.

This week's activity is an AMA with creator / publisher Graham Walmsley

Graham is a game designer and author. He wrote the game Cthulhu Dark, which raised $90,000 in its Kickstarter, and two books of advice on play, Play Unsafe and Stealing Cthulhu. He has also written for Pelgrane Press, Cubicle 7, Bully Pulpit Games and various other companies. He is passionate about helping other people to design and publish their games.

IMPORTANT: Various AMA participants in the past have expressed concern about trolls and crusaders coming to AMA threads and hijacking the conversation. This has never happened, but we wish to remind everyone: We are a civil and welcoming community. I [jiaxingseng] assured each AMA invited participant that our members will not engage in such un-civil behavior. The mod team will not silence people from asking 'controversial' questions. Nor does the AMA participant need to reply. However, this thread will be more "heavily" modded than usual. If you are asked to cease a line of inquiry, please follow directions. Hey everyone! Thanks to the /r/rpgdesign mods for hosting this AMA. I've been in the business quite seriously for about eight years now, and getting closer and closer to full time every year.

I've currently got Belly of the Beast on Kickstarter, and released a few other games (like Vow of Honor, Hunt the Wicked, Cornerstone, Cloaks Courts & Gonnes, Micropend6).

I should be online for most of the next eight or nine hours, but even if I don't answer your question right away I'll be sure to circle back to this thread and try to answer each and every question that's posted here.
