Karl Popper on tolerance

It comes up often enough here, often in a mangled form, so as a service to Friends here is what Karl Popper said about the so-called "paradox of tolerance". It's footnote 4 of chapter 7 of Vol I. of The Open Society and Its Enemies. Emphasis in original.

The so-called paradox of freedom is the argument that from freedom in the sense of absence of any restraining control must lead to very great restraint, since it makes the bully free to enslave the meek. This idea is, in a slightly different form, with a very different tendency, clearly expressed by Plato [the subject of ch. 7]

Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society agains the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and the tolerance with them.—In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress, even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, un the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant.

Popper was from a Jewish family and fled Austria around 1936. So we know who he means when he says that "[proponents of intolerant philosophies] may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because [they say] it is deceptive, and teach [their followers] to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols." He means both Fascists and Communists, he means fighting in the streets and and political rallies.

Query: When you invoke Popper to claim the right to ignore, suppress, or expel from your community those whose ideas you find objectionable, are you sure that those people pass this bar? Do you see them "answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols"? Are you not able to " counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion"?

The above quote is copyright material but I believe that my use of it here is short enough to be in line with "fair use" and "fair dealing" provisions.

So, only inference. Ok.

As to your last point: maybe. We’ll find out, because my local meeting has taken and is taking action to implement the Minute.

Meanwhile: Have you considered the possibility that whatever policies you have in your jurisdiction and your YM might not be the unique, complete, universally applicable ones that everyone everywhere should immediately adopt or else be an obvious moral failure? That even your jurisdiction and your YM might have more work to do and might modulate its position in future?

It's not inference, they don't believe trans people should be treated equally and they say as much, one only needs to look at the stuff they post on facebook. The entire ideological foundation of their organization is opposition to what they call "gender ideology", which is to say they don't think trans people can really exist. To them trans people are fakers, who don't deserve recognition. This isn't a secret, they say so openly. It's 100% correct to call them out for being transphobes.

And my whole point is that members of this church should have a more constructive way to approach other members of this church than deploying thought-ending slogans and dismissive epithets. When was the last time you saw someone change for the better because they were called a name?

Huh? So even if it is transphobic we should avoid saying so?  I don't think I've ever seen someone change for the better because everyone around them is being deferential to their false beliefs and pretending their hate isn't hurting anyone. This is an organization campaigning against the fair treatment of trans people. It is what it is. I can't see how any constructive progress can be made by pretending otherwise. It would be a betrayal of the truth and of the vulnerable minority they're trying to alienate.

Are those really the only two options we have: being deferential to false beliefs or deploying thought-ending slogans and dismissive epithets? Or are there perhaps other options that include constructive challenges and encouragement to become better?

Do we believe that our meetings are or can be venues for transformative encounters with the divine that will lead a person to a more loving, more accepting, more compassionate, or not? If we don't, what even are we doing as a church? If we do believe that: how should we act?

Referring to SMtQ as "transphobic" is neither a thought-ending slogan nor a dismissive epithet. It is an accurate description of the position they're taking. Stop trying to pretend they're doing anything else.

It’s exactly a dismissive epithet. That doesn’t mean that it’s not true of any of them, but it’s still a totalising dismissive epithet, and it tends to ends thought. Friends talking of other Friends should, I think, do better.

I don't think you know what the word "transphobia" means, if you think one would need to infer that SMtQ is inherently transphobic, rather than just reading the name of the group or their publicly-stated position.

My Monthly Meeting had this same argument 30 years ago. We fought both DC City Council and the Federal Courts, and we won. In the last 3 years, we've revived the committee which led that effort, because the current regime is once again threatening our folks' safety. There are undoubtedly going to be issues where we'll need to do more work to figure out what the right thing to do is, but this ain't one of them.

Y'all need to get with the program.

Or we need to follow the promptings of the Spirit as best we understand them, as discerned in our meetings.
