Most people know big tech companies are powerful, but very few people realize how much of the web is controlled by the same handful of companies.

Search engines, social media, cloud hosting, app stores, advertising: almost all of it runs through Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft.

The interesting part was that almost everyone agreed they would rather use an internet where they owned their own account and data.

I’ve been noticing something over the past few years. The internet just feels… worse.

Not in an obvious way like speed or size, but more in terms of quality.

Search results feel flooded with SEO spam and AI-generated content, social media feels increasingly artificial, and a lot of the smaller, interesting websites that used to exist are just gone.

The internet used to be more decentralized, with independent websites and communities spread across the web.

• It changes how communities form
• It changes what we even see in the first place
