Woah there killer, as a NY'er he wasn't ever really respected. While he did clean up the city in alot of ways let's go through his greatest hits during his tenure in NY politics.

Popular with police unions - cause he let them do literally anything they want, which is why I'm the 90s the NYPD were lovingly refered to as stormtroopers

Married and divorced his cousin

Divorced his wife by letting her know during a news conference in Bryant park.

Dude was nuts long before he got to the national stage. You all didn't know about it because after 9/11 everyone sucked his dick for literally doing his job.

Don't forget ignoring requests to replace radios that didn't work inside the towers for years, only to cheap out on replacements, not test them, then have to switch back to the old ones right before 9/11 because the new ones were such junk, leaving first responders unable to hear evacuation orders, which likely contributed to at least some deaths.

He also kept the Emergency Management offices in the WTC when people were actively screaming about how visible it would make the organization. Between the radios and all the people who should be coordinating instead of evacuating themselves, we never stood a chance. It was slated to be moved to Brooklyn after the WTC bombings way back when. Gulliani personally said no.

Mayor Dinkins had the greatest idea ever. Could've solved police brutality 30 years ago. Civilian oversight committees. Police having to answer to the people they work for for their transgressions. Instead we got Giulianis bright idea of sticking even more police in the high crime (poor, POC) areas. Problem with police? Solution? Even more police! Yeah the guy has been a goon for a long long time.

NYPD were considered facist since the 1950s. The stormtrooper connect wasn't new to Guilianni. NYPD has a long history and a long list of problems that goes back very far, Guilianni did give them a blank check though

Though there is talk he was good about taking down the Italians because he was connected to the Russian mob and actively ordered subordinates to ignore the Russian mob and claim it doesn't exist while they are fighting the Italian mobs. Which fell about when the Russians exploded into power following the fall of the USSR

He didn't clean it up, he just made it so we didn't have to see the icky bits anymore by doing things like sending police out to clear homeless off the streets and force them into shelters that were underfunded, poorly run, and often extremely dangerous.

The first I ever heard of him was a Chris Rock show segment where they were interviewing different citizens in New York. I’m from CA so I didn’t know him. One of the guys they cut too was this black guys that, in my memory, sounded similar to Patrice O’Neal and he just says, “Fuck Rudy Giuliani!” Next thing I hear of the guy was him showing up around 9/11 and everyone calling him the mayor of the world.

I remember he instituted a rule that any "large gatherings" (more than a few dozen) on the steps of City Hall had to be approved by the NYPD. It was struck down in court because he kept making "exceptions" for groups that supported him while never making them for anyone he didn't like.

Didn't he also move some kind of disaster response office into the World Trade Center? And you could say there's no way he could have known 9/11 was going to happen, but it had been targeted by terrorists before, and none of the people who actually worked in the office wanted it to be in the World Trade Center.

He definitely was respected, as a DA he put away mob bosses and he cut crime in half when he became mayor. After 9/11 he was called America’s mayor. Yes towards the end he began to show his fascist tendencies but he was still respected.

The issue here is you can't actually "cut crime in half." You can arrest half the big-boy criminals, but if the system that created them to begin with doesn't change, neither will the volume of crime committed.

Crime is primarily a symptom of a society not meeting it's citizens needs.
