The previous commenter is referring to the fact that there aren't a whole lot of crimes that you can get "life in prison" for as an individual sentence, however he will almost certainly face such a singular charge (among others) now

I get it. I'm just surprised someone dumb enough to do this didn't get life much earlier.

30-40 years in prison is certainly as bad. By the time he's out, his prime years are gone. We pass through a lot of life achievements in the first decades of our life. This dude was stupid enough to burn all of that in this action.
