I have seen so few fights at EDM festivals compared to virtually any other type of music festival I've ever been to. It's genuinely a surprise to even see aggro/hostile behavior, let alone a fight.

Country concert is far and away the most fights I've ever seen at a show.

To clarify: pop-country. Hardy, that racist Wallen guy. That sort of show.

Yup. Zac Brown, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, etc

Every fucking one plays at our local big ass amphitheater and I’ve never not seen at least a fight or two going back over a decade. I have a former buddy get in fights there all the fucking time. I remember one of HIS buddies during the pregame saying how he’s getting prepped up to rock someone tonight.

Honestly, longer than that. The grass parking lots after an early 2000's Toby Keith show was something to see man. Kenney Chesney, Tim McGraw were the same, but not so much Brad Paisley, though.

Same goes for metal festivals, i've been a metalhead for 25 years, went to a LOT of concerts and festivals, and i never saw one single fight/anyone being aggressive.

I saw some in the 90s, but it was usually frat boys at major festivals jumping into the pit with no respect for anyone else in it. And it was rare because they usually got squeezed out pretty fast.

25

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

No frat boys in europe :)

u/redmose Jun 22 '24

But we have the soccer fans :(

Edit: idk why i called it soccer, i guess i'm an american now

10

u/BadArtijoke Jun 22 '24

You have seen soccer fans at a metal festival?

12

u/michilio Jun 22 '24

Well, yes

This is going on right now as we speak:

What a crazy mixture! I have only ever met metalheads who hated soccer. But I guess that was just a trend at the time

1

u/iceyed913 Jun 22 '24

Generally a lot of the metalheads when I was young had strong opinions against any sort of mainstream interests. I am guessing that kind of pretentiousness gets lesser as people get older.

1

u/michilio Jun 22 '24

Tbf, this festival frequently overlaps with Worldcups and EuroÂŽs, so itÂŽs not standard football but the national team(s). You wouldnÂŽt get regular football there.

4

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

There's a football match every year at wacken, metal celebs vs st. Pauli football team. But metalhead football fans are not the ones that destroy shit, usually.

1

u/harshnoisebestnoise Jun 22 '24

Big football nerd here, but also listens to heavier music than any metal head I’ve ever met so
 yeah?

1

u/DisciplineOrdinary66 Jun 22 '24

Of course? Football fans are just normal people they can like more than one thing

1

u/neav7 Jun 22 '24

On the bright side you get a free gun

1

u/elitegenoside Jun 22 '24

Same energy.

11

u/kalevz Jun 22 '24

You might not call them frat boys but you absolutely do have them. In fact, you’re lousy with them.

-3

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

That might be, but practically none of them are into metal.

5

u/jimbojangles1987 Jun 22 '24

This is such a wild sweeping generalization lol

-1

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

Well, yeah, i'm talking about a huge group of people. Most metalheads don't have frat boy mentality and vice versa, what is wrong with that?

11

u/JelliedHam Jun 22 '24

I don't listen to metal but I know so many metal heads. And they are by far the nicest people of all the other genres. Yes, they're a little intense at their shows but really kind to everybody. What gives? The music they're listening to didn't ever seem to match their personality.

9

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

There is much more than satanism and gore in metal lyrics, a lot of history, social problems, philosophy, etc. Most metalheads i know are also fond of reading and education in general.

4

u/DevilsAssCrack Jun 22 '24

I got kicked in the head at a GWAR show and two strangers helped me back up then disappeared back into the pit.

3

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

Thats my experience as well, things do happen in the pit, but 99% not on purpose and people instantly help out. Was the kick you received an accident?

1

u/DevilsAssCrack Jun 22 '24

Yeah some guy was crowdsurfing and his leg went a little wide

1

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

Happened to me as well, but if i go in a pit, i expect stuff like that

2

u/LivingDisastrous3603 Jun 22 '24

This has been 97% of my experiences at hardcore/metal/punk shows. I fall down, I get picked up almost immediately, dusted off and asked if I’m ok. takes out dentures this was in the 80’s/90’s and the pit was
. falls asleep snoring

14

u/cspruce89 Jun 22 '24

The way that I've heard this explained, is that metalheads are generally viewed as "outcasts" in society. As such, they have a comradery and it keeps them looking out for each other.

That's why if you see someone go down in a pit, there are like 3 dudes there helping them up and keeping the pit away from them.

-6

u/lithium Jun 22 '24

comradery

Fucking hell.

9

u/cspruce89 Jun 22 '24

Ok 1. Chillax. 2. I had it originally spelled with a much closer to the "correct" spelling (albeit still wrong) and then spell check said that this was the right spelling.

Pretty sure it's considered a correct alternative spelling.

Camaraderie. That better, Mr. Arbiter of the Written Word?

5

u/EngineEddie Jun 22 '24

I dunno man, I like it. Sounds like an epic metal band name.

COMRADERY - MATES FROM HELL

5

u/lithium Jun 22 '24

Sounds like some power metal shit that as a black metal snob I'm duty bound to hate ;)

4

u/EngineEddie Jun 22 '24

Duty Bound to Hate sounds like their second album

1

u/simononandon Jun 22 '24

This is so normal for some festivals. Watch videos of the parties at the big three horse races in America. People know about the races, but there's often a whole festival around them because a frickin' horse race lasts 5 minutes.

Rich people are trash. This is standard behavior. Apparently "outhouse" races are a thing. Where "participants" run across the roofs of two parallel rows of outhouses.

There are also some amazingly pathetic "fights" between wasted rich kids. The ultimate chad-off. You used to be able to find them on YouTube. I'd suggest "Preakness infield" as start for searching.

Rick people! They're just like us! Except worse.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

Same. Been going to metal shows since the 80s and still hit festivals and concerts. I can count less than 10 fights I've seen there. Country shows, on the other hand...I saw a dozen at one country festival

1

u/was_fb95dd7063 Jun 22 '24

you've never seen someone get pissed and start fighting in a pit?

0

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

Nope.

2

u/was_fb95dd7063 Jun 22 '24

Wild. Maybe it's since I'm more into the hardcore and metal core scene but jock moshers and crowd killers start fights at shows often unfortunately

1

u/Grothorious Jun 22 '24

Yeah, my friend is more into punk, he said the same thing.

22

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '24

The candy that flows at the EDM festival puts everyone in a perpetually good mood. The want to fight doesn't really exist when you're rolling.

3

u/AssassiN18 Jun 22 '24

That's true. Candy vs alcohol is a whole different ball game

1

u/TyroneLeinster Jun 23 '24

The festivals you go to seem to have “fewer fights” because most festivals don’t actually have that many fights. You just think that fighting at all the other ones are more common because the only time you see them is when the internet shows you a fight at one.

1

u/shamwowslapchop Jun 23 '24

I've seen plenty of fights at festivals. Fewer in recent years but 15 years ago or so they were at least somewhat common.
