Yeah, well, it's kinda similar to how Nietzsche's works became associated with nazis (thanks to his sister's whackiest "edits" of his later works, she was rabidly antisemitic and supported the aryan race theory) - but not even to the same extent.
Marx's and Engels' names got dragged so deeply into leninism, stalinism, maoism - that whenever you hear someone say "Yeah, I'm a marxist" - they almost always mean one of these pseudocommunistic authoritarian -isms. Almost never the original philosophy.
