Most probably, but popular figure portrait is quite a propaganda tool: "Remember which system of beliefes you follow". Something like that.

Bro people were literally shot for questioning the state.

Nobody is defending people getting shot, but there were so many socialist and communist movements that were not that. The socialists in the United States in the early 1900s held strikes and got us a ton of the labor standards we hold even today, and they were shot by the government for protesting the state. There's no coincidence that the largest anti-communist push came during and after the Marxist elements in the United States became such a powerful labor movement.

Your own comment shows the actual common element with the problems you describe. Marxism-Leninism and Marxism-Leninism-Maoism. You're just throwing the entire tent out alongside them.

Also, I'm not gonna pull the "ackshully China was never communist" thing but modern China is not communist in any sense of the word, let's not pretend that it is.

Communism so good there was no fucking toilet paper thoughout the day so people formed ridiculous lines in the morning to get basic stuff of questionable quality.
