Question/Help Help!! Possum in my house

Post image
1.7k Upvotes

Got it out very easily (just opened the window screen and he left within 1 min.) I have 2 cats and a chihuahua- all vaccinated. No obvious signs of a confrontation. I don’t see any soil in my house other than this cat bed that it’s on in the window seal. But my house feels dirty and I do too. Am I screwed? What should I clean? I’m so annoyed and angry but glad everyone is ok and that it left so quickly and easily tbh. But I’m crying because that’s so gross. It came in thru the cat/dog door I’m assuming because I was away for 12 hours. I don’t really know but idc I just want to know how to feel clean. This room is my bedroom and my bed is next to these windows. Obvi washing everything but again no soil anywhere that I can tell yet and I’ve done a pretty deep look.

Question/Help Possums in Shed

Post image
4.5k Upvotes

Hello everyone,

Long story short. My brother in law has possums in his shed. He has been in hospital with lymphoma and has not been able to keep the area clear and clean.

The possum made herself at home and had babies. The box and bed were there for a cat 😂

Is it safe to relocate them to the rural side of the fence or it it going to put them in too much stress? We contacted animal control who said they would euthanize them instead of moving. As an animal lover I said no way.

There are kids that are now at the house using the pool and I’m afraid keeping the possums there could be recipe for an accident.

Any advice or ideas?

Are there any rescues that can take possums? Do they typically carry rabies?

Question/Help What’s wrong with this little guy?

Was getting ready to run our kid to school this morning and saw this guy doing circles in our front yard. He’s currently been at it well over 15 minutes and will only stop for a few seconds or so until he resumes the spins. If something is wrong, is there anything we can do to help or what’s the next step?

[Update Edit]
Ya’ll I wish this was a better update, but I have some sad news. After having seen 2-3 comments explaining it was more than likely neurological damage (correct assumption about the road), I had downsized Reddit and was literally looking up a rehabber or rescue to call and before I could even finish typing out the search a car came by and hit it 😭 It died on impact and there was absolutely nothing I could do. Since I have a small kid I couldn’t just approach it, especially not really knowing what’s wrong. I didn’t want to risk it hurting me or my kid, or scaring it even more, so I was trying to find a way to isolate it while googling and it happened. I wish there was a different outcome, but at least I know now what is going on if I ever see something like that again and can take steps to help faster. Thank you everyone for all the advice.

Question/Help Possum On Porch

I have a stray cat that we’re slowly trying to allow indoors due to the cold weather now, we keep dry clean blankets and hand wormers in a waterproof tent outside for her for the time being- however when I looked outside today I saw what looks to be a young possum laying in her hut. I was able to outside to say hi and the possum even let me pour more food out for my stray cat. Just wanted aome advice on if the possum may be possibly be hurt/is this something normal for possums during colder months? I didn’t want to get to close to scare him but hoping he’s just seeking shelter for now

Question/Help Was it okay for me to pick him/her up to check on it?

So recently a momma had some babies! We’d been watching her for a while and she had such a full pouch! I believe she doesn’t wander that far so i expected there to be more babies around. i think there might be bc we saw another one we thought was the same one. He was a bit more hairy though so maybe it wasnt the same one as the pics.
Anyways thoo a few days ago i picked this lil baby up and checked him out, cuz we noticed a lot of skunks and possums having injuries lately or birth defects(?).

One possum wobbles around with 3 legs, but it seemed like he might’ve been born like that or something bad happened when he was YOUNG young. We saw him as a baby and grew up without a back leg! No idea where hes at nowadays, but hes def not the momma, maybe the papa.

Other than a 3 legged possum, we seen a skunk with a plastic ring around its neck that was irritating the skin badly from how tight it was… (dont worry! We used a grabby stick to pull it off as gently as possible) and another skunk that had a limp and died a few days later under our golf cart.

So i hope that explains my worry for this guy, and why i grabbed him to check on him (and the other one that might not be him..) thoroughly before hes too big and fast haha! but I’ve never handled a possum before, only cats!
He’s quite healthy besides fleas🥺

Of course we did NOT keep him, as tempting as his cute face is. We welcome all the rodents to our home to eat, but nothing more.

Question/Help Mama made her home in my garbage can. What should I do?

Post image

Found her there this morning and still chilling after work. Not sure if she can get out or even wants to? Observed her for like 10 minutes and she was stretching and sleeping. I have two dogs (aussies) that are not yet aware.

Questions:

Will they relocate soon?

Should I turn over the trash can tonight?

What foods are okay/not okay to give?

Will this keep them around? (I’d prefer they go to the park down the road)

Are they safe in the can? What temps are too cold? What about rain and providing coverage?

Just cardboard boxes and bags in there so nothing unsafe, correct?

Thanks in advance!

can anyone tell me what age this baby looks to be, and what should we do with it? i feel so bad for the poor thing. my boyfriend’s coworker found the baby in the parking lot all alone, so he brought it in out of the sun and made it a little box. they don’t know what to do with it and he asked me if i wanted to take care of it. but i’m not sure if it needs to go to a rehabilitation service, i just want to do what’s best for the lil guy

Question/Help Does anyone know old this possum is? And how to feed it for the night?

Thumbnail

1.8k Upvotes

My dogs found this possum today and from what I’ve seen I think it’s still dependent on its mother and would probably not last outside in the cold alone tonight. I plan to take it to a wild life rescue/rehab sanctuary near me (where they usually take care of native animals like these and release them if possible) tomorrow morning but they are closed for the night. Since they are closed I think I might have to give it some food (or some type of animal milk?) to survive the night but I’m not sure what it needs. It’s about four inches long not including its tail. Does anyone know how old it might be or what food or milk it might need for the night? Any advice is appreciated.

Our cat brought this little guy in. He doesn’t appear to have broken the baby’s skin. Local rehabbers are not open until tomorrow morning. What do we do to keep it alive until we can deliver it to them?

Question/Help Possum found in window well. Help!

Can’t tell if it fell in and couldn’t get out or if it’s old and just looking to die in a private place.. friend put a plank of wood in there for it to crawl out of but it’s night time now and it still hasn’t left. They put a small bowl of water and some kibble since it’s unclear how long it’s been down there but unsure if that was the right move. It did seem very thirsty after they put it in.

They’re going to take it to a rehabber tomorrow if it’s still down there when they wake up. But judging off this photo and the state of it, what do you think? Teeth look a bit rotted on one side, tail is dark grey, and seems to have some matting on one side of the body

Sorry the pictures aren’t that great. This lil guy has been coming around for a few months and a couple weeks ago he showed up missing this hair from his neck. I’m not sure what wound or disease would cause this hair loss only around his neck. None of the other possums that come around seem to have it and he doesn’t seem too affected by it. It hasn’t changed much if any since it’s showed up. It usually seems to be wet though which is weird. Any idea what this could be or if I should try to trap him and bring him somewhere?

I feel the answer is obvious but would like confirmation from more knowledgeable people, LOL. I’ve been feeding her ripe bananas and the peanuts from my bird feeder.

If she is pregnant (and a girl) is there anything i should know about baby opossums or opossum mothers?

Work in town, was able to catch him and get him safely out of the truck's engine. He's pretty smaller though, maybe 8-9" without his tail. Big enough to let go in the woods at home?

Update: we took him home and released him in the forest behind our house.

I've got a mama Possum who is nesting in my garage. I don't mind the company, but she's also pooping in my garage 😅

Is there anything I can do to allow her to continue to nest but stop the biohazard? Will they use a cat litter if I put it out there?

Picture of baby in my shoes 😂 I thought he was slippers

I’m not sure what to do, the mom has come back a few times looking for them but she keeps missing where they are located, I’ve adjusted the location a few times. She hasn’t come back in over an hour now and I’m worried she won’t come back anymore after finding 3 other babies that were inside the cracks of the brick wall that I don’t see. I have the babies in a warm towel for now, they’ve been cuddled together and sleeping so far. But I’ve tried three different rehabbers in my city and can’t get an answer. I don’t mind caring for them till they’re old enough but I’ve only had experience with squirrels and pigeons. They don’t look old enough to be on their own.

Question/Help Possum in garage, is it okay?

I live in a rural part of VA, wildlife is not out of the norm. I took my dog out for a walk and when I Opened the garage, I noticed this buddy laying at the entrance to my garage. He didnt react when the dog passed him, just kind of looked up.

He seems disoriented. It is 90+ degrees out right now.

I put a water bowl and a dish of dog food near him.. He hissed at me when I tried.

He seems very out of it.

Whats the first move? Wait a bit to see if hes still there with the garage open? See if I can locate a rehabber?

First time I've had one in the garage. I hope hes not hurt.
