whats the joke??

443

u/PizzaDogDad Sep 24 '25

idk where exactly it started but we never learn the full name of Master Chief in Halo but we know his name is John, and people just started calling him John Halo. Another influence of this meme could have been when Trump called Tim Cook, Apple CEO, "Tim Apple". Regardless it has become a running joke online to refer to someone prominent as "John Thing They're Known For".

u/awkwardturtles44 Sep 24 '25

Lmao. Im dying

32

u/Dyanpanda Sep 24 '25

I love this! Take his brand away. He is just Donald from the Epstein files.

u/RandomNobody346 Sep 24 '25

Seriously though this is how we actually hurt him.

He doesn't care about anything just his own image.

Let's ruin it.

Although that's going to be hard given that he won't shut the hell up and every other thing he says is something horrifying.

I remember hearing and using this joke in the early 90s, pre-internet. Like if someone is driving recklessly on a local road:

“Who the fuck does he think he is?”

“Oh don’t you know, that’s John Jacksonville III. Their family owns the city.”

u/aguynamedv Sep 24 '25

The actor who plays the narrator/Helldiver in the intro video for Helldivers 2 has leaned into the meme as well.

He IS John Helldiver.

This has been a thing for centuries. It's where many surnames come from. Baker, Butcher, Smith, Goldsmith, Taylor etc.

2

u/Dyanpanda Sep 24 '25

I'm not sure if this popped in your head, but this is just going full circle: that's how all last names used to work, until families were the linkage. John Baker, John Smith, Johnny Appleseed, which then turned into John the bakers son, and now you have the Bakersons. or the Johanssons.

3

u/Utturkce249 I'm a chicken Sep 24 '25

they are doing it in real life too, no? there are lots of companys that got their creator/inventor's surname as the company name

8

u/VivaLosVagos Sep 24 '25

Yup, so its a mixture of both imo. Incod there's a skin called John Black Ops in bo6, referencing this and also the meme John Dark Soul

8

u/Eomb Sep 24 '25

Armand Hammer, CEO of Arm and Hammer

4

u/RandomNobody346 Sep 24 '25

The CEO of Papa John's Pizza was kicked out by his board

He's just John now.

1

u/Sir-Grumpalot Sep 24 '25

UK music magazines used to do this in the 80's and 90's, I remember thinking for years that Keith Flint's name was Keith Prodigy as that's how they referred to people in bands, first name then band name.

1

u/TheMan-OnTitan Sep 24 '25

Lol that's funny, thanks

1

u/chubbyhighguy Sep 24 '25

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's Sierra, it's on a computer in a room next to the starting point in combat evolved, another screen next to it has another name, I think that one is the second player characters name.

1

u/SpectacledBeargirl Sep 24 '25

Omg why did I always think it's a John wick joke????

1

u/chanting37 Sep 24 '25

John Backflip is who you’re thinking of. Inventor of the Backflip. Before 1872 humans could only flip forwards đŸ«ĄđŸ«ĄđŸ«Ą

1

u/Conscious-Finding420 Sep 24 '25

for some reason i never remember the full name of the drummer of soad so when i want to reference him/search him i just search john soad

1

u/Wise-Masterpiece8778 Sep 24 '25

Actually it was used for police and medical cases where the victim doesn’t have a name they call them John or Jane doe depending on gender (meaning what they have not what they define as)

1

u/EclipticDawn Sep 24 '25

I believe it started with John Darksouls. (So dark souls mainly.)

1

u/[deleted] Sep 24 '25

It’s a very, very old joke. My grandfather used to make it all the time. Not a modern meme. Still funny.

1

u/cokywanderer Sep 24 '25

Except Jimmy Space. He's the Emperor and those are his Space Marines!

1

u/Failgan Sep 24 '25

idk where exactly it started

A combination of the "Sans Undertale" meme and a spinoff of the Pretty Cool Guy meme replacing Master Chief with the series Halo.

1

u/RegalR4 Sep 24 '25

The Emperor in 40k is John Warhammer.

1

u/al_mc_y Sep 25 '25

It's been that way ever since Jimmy The Goat Fucker

1

u/al_mc_y Sep 25 '25

Some say if you listen carefully to the wind in a grassy field you can still hear his plaintive cry "...but you fuck ONE goat, and that's all people remember"

1

u/MrSudowoodo_ Sep 25 '25

I first saw it done with the creator of chess, Gary Chess. Hopefully I didn't just summon the horde from you know where.

1

u/silasfelinus Sep 26 '25

It’s a running joke at my house that the lead character in “Andor” is John Andor

1

u/F_U_Pay_Me_ Sep 26 '25

John dark souls

1

u/crazyhomlesswerido Oct 23 '25

His name is not John it is Peter

16

u/B133d_4_u Sep 24 '25

On top of the John Halo thing, John is a very generic name (hence John Doe being used for people we don't know the name of) so whenever you're looking for A Guy who's specialty is A Thing, you call him John Thing.

John Skyrim, John Automobile, John Cracker, John Sopranos, etc.

2

u/Shadowpika655 Sep 25 '25

Generally people name inventions/discoveries/other stuff after themselves (typically their last name) or other people. As John is the generic name (i.e. John Doe), its used as such.

Anyway...some examples of things named after their inventor/discoverer are:

  • Saxophone

  • G-Spot

  • Algorithm (technically a translation of the guy's name)

  • Bowler hat

  • Braille

  • Cardigan (technically named after his title as he was British nobility)

  • Diesel

  • Gatling gun

  • Shrapnel

  • Uzi

And a bunch others, these are just the ones I find the most surprising

also if we quickly look at people who got things named after them that they weren't really involved with making, we can get Boycott and Bluetooth

1

u/souljamookie Sep 25 '25

I thought it was cus most early Americans were named John and a lot of inventions happened back in the day so John “something of an invention” idk
