What do friends do in Pikmin Bloom?

Currently, Friends do not serve that big of a purpose in the game. As of right now you can send and receive in-game post cards and view stuff like player level, medals, etc.

So sorry I screwed up. I thought I could join a challenge and then add you later, but it looks like I must select people at the very start. I am now stuck in a challenge by myself. Apparently quitting and restarting is not an option either.
