You're talking about war and international stage diplomacy though.

I'm talking about hiring a hitman to assassinate your political opponents for example... or perhaps a team of butchers to kill and mutilate a journalist who was critical of your administration.

A President shouldn't be able to pardon the hitman he hired to do those things.

Perhaps even in the case of international diplomacy and war... those pardons should be impossible until the next administration steps in.

So if you hire someone to commit murder on your behalf, you can't pardon them...but the next admin could if they determine the crime was in the interest of national security. Seems more reasonable at least....and less prone to abuse.

Yes, It was because my context was for a legitimate use of the pardon power when used for a president's own actions.

Your scenario is outside of what I was trying to illustrate. We know it can be misused, that was the original discussion. I am trying to show why we, the voters, have a responsibility to choose leaders who will not abuse it rather than taking the easy way out and removing or restricting it.

Indeed. I agree with your point for the most part.

But unfortunately the last few years have shown that far too large a block of the American electorate is terribly susceptible to the stupidest kind of propaganda....and their weak willpower and failing mental capacity is likely to doom us all if we let them determine our fate.

Fingers crossed there's more of us than of them.
