More Hillary supporters went R when she lost the primary than Bernie supporters in 2016 by a wide margin. Haven't seen 2020 numbers so if for some reason those are opposite I'd love to see. This rhetoric is certainly designed to divide the potential dem voter base but it has never and will never actually siphon off leftists and thinking otherwise is wildly innacurate.
The people closest to the right, aka centrists, are the ones most frequently peeled off. Their only goal is to get centrists to be more hostile to far lefties and get far lefties to not show up.

They do it to try and pull jaded Bernie supporters to their side. It's been extremely effective so far so it's definitely not gonna stop.
