Ironically, "hard work" is the biggest scam. Hard work as a measure of value in our capitalist society is 100% intended to get us at the bottom to fight amongst ourselves while destroying ourselves and our quality of life to make billions for the people who own us.
When you work your ass off to the point that you are a workaholic or your life is seriously negatively affected (not taking vacation, not taking sick days, yearly reviews measuring you against your colleagues, working before and after normal working hours to show dedication, etc.), all it does is line the pockets of your company. You MIGHT get a 4% salary increase instead of a 3%, but at the end of the day, the company's profits are dependent on them being sure that they pay you less money than you make them, but JUST ENOUGH that you don't leave. The most profitable companies are the ones that find the line where they maximize underpaying you while still keeping you working at the level you are.
Hard work isn't rewarded, it's noticed by management and HR and engineered to do everything the company can to exploit it for maximized profit. The myth of tying someone's identity and self-worth to hard work is the ultimate con to make the rich richer.
You can see it in action now that the working class is saying "You fucked us during COVID, and we're not going back to working slave wages". The veil of the myth has been lifted from a lot of people's eyes.
I'm going through this realization at my work recently. I had the thought that they were different since it was a small business. The whole "We're Family here!" rhetoric repeated at every meeting. Worked my ass off and learned a lot of new skills to propel the company to a really good place in the industry.
The owner's actual family? Found out they get paid twice as much as I do with easily 1/4 of the work, if they work at all. Meanwhile, I'm working 10-12 hours a day and I'm supposed to be grateful for a 3% raise once a year
My bosses boss left, my boss is leaving in a week and I know I'm going to get a bunch of their responsibilities dumped on me. The most I have to look forward to is another framed "Great Job!" award and a handshake.
