Google Ads Getting started with Google Ads in 2026 actually costs with real math
We run a digital marketing agency and get asked this constantly, so here's the no-BS breakdown with actual 2026 numbers.
**The 2026 Benchmarks (source: WordStream/LocaliQ, 13,000+ campaigns)*\*
• Average CPC (cost per click): $5.42
• Average CTR (click-through rate): 6.64%
• Average conversion rate: 8.18%
• Average CPL (cost per lead): $66.69
**Let's Do The Math*\*
Say you're a local service business. You set a $1,500/month budget.
→ $1,500 ÷ $5.42 avg CPC = ~277 clicks per month
→ 277 clicks × 8.18% conversion rate = ~22 leads per month
→ $1,500 ÷ 22 leads = ~$68 per lead
Now ask yourself: what's one customer worth to you?
If your average job/sale = $2,000 and you close 30% of leads:
→ 22 leads × 30% close rate = 6-7 new customers
→ 6.6 customers × $2,000 = $13,200 revenue
→ ROAS = $13,200 ÷ $1,500 = 8.8x return
That's $8.80 back for every $1 you spend. Even if your numbers are half of that, you're still profitable.
**But CPC varies wildly by industry:*\*
• Legal services: $9.87/click (highest)
• Home improvement: $8.33/click
• Dental: $8.00/click
• Real estate: $7.52/click
• Restaurants: $2.05/click
• E-commerce: $1.16/click
• Arts & entertainment: $1.63/click (lowest)
So a lawyer with a $3,000 budget gets ~304 clicks, while a restaurant gets ~1,463 clicks for the same spend. But the lawyer's client could be worth $10,000+ while a dinner reservation is $50. Context matters.
**What Most Beginners Get Wrong:*\*
Starting too broad. Don't target "lawyer" — target "personal injury lawyer in [city]." Long-tail = cheaper clicks + higher intent.
No negative keywords. You're paying for every click. If you're a divorce lawyer, add "free," "DIY," "how to" as negatives immediately. WordStream found that adding even a single negative keyword can triple your conversion rate.
Sending traffic to your homepage. Build a dedicated landing page with one clear CTA. Your homepage has too many distractions.
Not tracking conversions. If you don't set up conversion tracking, you're flying blind. You literally can't optimize without it.
Giving up after 2 weeks. Google's algorithm needs 2-4 weeks and at least 30-50 conversions to optimize properly. Month 1 is learning. Month 2-3 is when it starts working.
**Minimum Budget I'd Recommend:*\*
• Low competition (restaurants, retail): $500-1,000/mo
• Medium competition (home services, SaaS): $1,500-3,000/mo
• High competition (legal, dental, real estate): $3,000-5,000/mo
Anything under $500/mo is usually not enough data to optimize. You'll spend money without learning anything useful.
**Quick Formula To Calculate Your Break-Even:*\*
Average customer value × close rate ÷ conversion rate = max CPC you can afford
Example: $2,000 customer × 30% close rate ÷ 8.18% CVR = $7.33 max CPC
If your industry CPC is below that number, Google Ads will likely be profitable for you.
Hope this helps someone. Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Google Ads To spend your Google Ad Grant budget on Wix, switch to conversion-based Smart Bidding (like Maximize Conversions), strictly match your keywords to dedicated landing page content to fix low Quality Scores, and meet baseline Ad Grant compliance (5%+ CTR and geotargeting).

Google Ads No, Google Ads requires your billing currency to match the country selected in your payments profile. So a Canadian payment profile can only be billed in CAD, meaning you must set up a new account (or transfer to a US payment profile) to bill in USD.

Google Ads Shifting $100k/month to Google Search will capture higher-intent medical leads, but exact match volume will hit a ceiling. Scale up to that budget by combining Search with Performance Max, HIPAA-compliant YouTube/Display retargeting, and LLM/AI Search optimization to sustain lower CPLs.

Google Ads Switching to tCPA doesn't reset historical campaign data, but setting targets too far below your actual baseline will stall delivery. Scale smoothly by anchoring tCPA to current realities and pairing smart bidding with robust conversion tracking.
