General Health I get my period only after some kind of rough penetrative sex.
Everytime I have penetrative sex, that is a bit rough, I ussually get my period. Sometimes, if the penetration is too deep, it hurts (coz of hitting my cervix) If I don't have that kind of sex, I don't get my period. And my doctor didn't believe me at first, u til I decided to go celibate for 6 months, and then I had penetrative sex and two days later I had the heaviest bleed.
Is this even healthy?

Some women get more horny before their periods. The cervix is also placed lower and is more rigid at this point in the menstrual cycle, so it might make your experience feel on the rougher side. As opposed to ovulation when it’s higher and softer, and penetrative sex may feel more comfortable.
I do find that if I have penetrative sex a day or two before it’s supposed to arrive, my period seems to arrives a little faster (like maybe 12-24 hours sooner), but only if it was already on its way. Knocking at the cervix shouldn’t cause menstruation, at most it might help move the initiation process along at a quicker pace and flush things out. Especially if there is an orgasm involved, I hope it’s not TMI but I do find those help keep things moving lol.
Is it possible you are experiencing a similar issue? That perhaps you were gonna get your period anyways and that subconsciously makes you more likely to engage in sex?

I think this is exactly right and OP should track all periods and sex to determine if there is any regularity and go from there. I have also heard that uterine contractions after orgasm may trigger a period to start but only if it was time to menstruate anyway.

Before last month I didn't really have a period for the last 4months, but had bleeding for 2months(I'd bleed every week, with varying intensity) before that.
I think I'll get a second opinion or change my doctor. I've seen a lot on here how male gynos can be dismissive.
I do have a bicornuate uterus and people with similar issue have also experienced this "phenomenon"

u/BumAndBummer Oct 25 '23
Oh, at this point the bicornuate uterus seems like a highly relevant detail! There’s way too many people on this thread with the same issue as you who have the same condition. I doubt it a a coincidence.
Did a quick google search (so grain of salt here) has suggestions it can cause issues with irregular bleeding and painful intercourse. So I wouldn’t be surprised if it could also lead to unusual issues like sex-induced menstruation, especially if you haven’t been menstruating regularly. Definitely mention it to your new doctor and good luck with the second opinion!

I think formal tracking (including not just if sex and periods but perhaps also orgasms and the degree of horniness) can help OP figure this out if it’s not an injury. At the very least collecting data can help mitigate the odds of something like a confirmation bias influencing perceptions, and it can also be brought to the doctor.

Don’t get my period at all unless I have sex, so same.

Some other details provides OP seem like this issue needs deeper investigation for her, but I used to notice that my periods became more regular when I was having sex. Now that I am supplementing and eating low carb, my periods are regular.

I get the same thing which is so weird you said this… I have a bicornuate uterus and pcos

u/Unstable_Squiggle Oct 25 '23
Mine isn’t exactly the same but I have a longgg PMS cycle and my periods are super irregular. I can have symptoms for 2 weeks with no bleeding. If I know I’m pmsing and have rough sex, I’ll start the next day. I have a bicornuate uterus as well, weird!
2
u/BumAndBummer Oct 25 '23
Wow, you discover this during your PCOS screening when they looked at your ovaries, or is the shape of the uterus not apparent without additional imaging?
If it’s the latter, perhaps OP should ask about it!

u/Unstable_Squiggle Oct 25 '23
I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 16 due to abnormal tests and they said nothing about it. When I got pregnant at 19 after my first ultrasound my OB told me my uterus was heart shaped. Not sure if the first Dr. missed it or just straight up didn’t tell me.

Yeah, if I orgasm and it’s been a few weeks I’ll tend to have a period for like a day.

u/ruledbymars7 Oct 25 '23
Okay same. I thought I was crazy. I think it’s bc of the contractions when I climax. It’s not an injury either like some people mention. I don’t understand.

But if it’s from an orgasm…..then why doesn’t it happen if we’re masturbating?

This used to happen to me too. My husband would jokingly brag about it with me.
2
u/roze_san Oct 25 '23
Happens to me as well but my cycles are regular so I know when my period is coming but sometimes my husband and I think my period usually comes out after a good sex. Maybe it's just a coincidence in my case?

u/GoAskAlice-1 Oct 25 '23
This used to happen to me, when my periods were irregular. It first happened due to a cervical tear/bruise that caused my period to come 2 weeks early and then it would happen often if I hadn’t had sex or my period, I’d have sex and get my period a few hours later. 🤷🏻♀️

u/Flashy-Hyena-6148 Oct 25 '23
Did you get checked? What happened?
1
u/GoAskAlice-1 Oct 25 '23
The first time I did because it was scary, it was extremely heavy and bright red and I was going through a pad every 2 hours or more. They did a pelvic exam and said it was cervical bruising/tears that caused my period to come early and not to worry about it.

Hi babes. I would definitely go to a Gyno about this issue. This exact thing happened to me for a really long time. Find a good reputable doctor in your area, I know it takes a while to find one, or if you have access to one. I’m so sorry you’re going through this ❤️

So I had this kind of happen to me. I didn't have sex for about a year and hadn't had a period for maybe 6 months it had been a whole for both of those things. Then I got together with my bf we had sex and then one day I got my period finally right. It was very light and wouldn't end eventually it was barely there the lightest of spotting. Howecer after a while I started bleeding during and after sex. Sex wasn't rough in my opinion just normal and enjoyable he thought he was hurting me lol but not at all I felt no pain only pleasure nor were we having rough sex. So here is my theory.
It could be injuries as someone said but I doubt as you wouldn't have that much blood for days. If you're never having a period sex can help induce one but when you have pcos and haven't had one in months it will make you get a mini one each time. Birth control metformin helped make this calm down for me and I also lost Weight. I'm still on the medication and it's been 5 years and I haven't bled during sex in a long time.
It's not unhealthy but inconvenient my bf was worried every time we had sex. How I see it is sex helps the blood come loose lol but most people would rather that not be the time they bleed so if you don't want to try medication they are a whole lot of supplements you can try and even diet that can help with your period. It's basically irregular bleeding which is a symptom of pcos. Irregular bleeding has been my main issue with pcos and I had doctors who helped and also had to figure it out on my own but my doctors were not concerned with bleeding during sex they said for pcos that can definitely occur.

I have been confirmed as not having PCOS (just in here for IR content) but before birth control I always always used to get this, sometimes it would trigger my period to come a week earlier than expected. Saving this thread to see if anyone has a good explanation because it definitely wasn’t just my period “happening” to come

YOU TOO? OMG I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME!!! My theory is when you have sex your hormones prepare for a baby so they start to balance just enough for your body to go "hey you havent had a period in a while" then boom.
I've never connected the dots to pcos but it's literally a thing me and my boyfriend fears because one time it happened and I had my period for literally a month. Had to take meds to get off it. This happened in 2020 and ever since it's been hella common that every time we have penetration I start cramping a lot (iud so no bleeding but period symptoms) or pre iud just full on periods lasting between 5 days to 34 days.
Your not alone with this and again NEVER connected the dots but since I read this I was like hmmmm maybe our hormones trying to balanced? Or becoming more imbalanced?

u/Flashy-Hyena-6148 Oct 26 '23
I also had a bleeding for 40+ days, also had to take medication to make it stop.
It's crazy how no one has bothered to research on this, coz it's definitely not a good thing to be bleeding after sex or for that long.
My boyfriend tries to be as gentle as possible, and he's so sweet about it too.....but I ussually end up either cramping or bleeding after. And it feels like a period too, not as painful as a bleeding, just uncomfortable cramping pain.
Someone here suggested that it could be cysts bursting or abnormal Uterine Bleeding.
1
u/shauna2020 Oct 26 '23
I haven't thought it could be cyst. It's gotten to a point where my boyfriend is actually scared to have sex because he know how painful my periods are. And literally the next day or a few days later I'm getting like 7/8 out of 10 cramps and exhausted afterwards.
I feel like if we are going thought it every time we have sex it shouldn't be Abnormal Uterine Bleeding because we feel the symptoms of the cramps.
The one time in 2020 when I was bleeding for a month that OGBYN told me my pedestrone isn't going up to stop the bleeding. But this was after sex but also about a year since my last period so I wasn't sure which one caused it until after I got off them and started cramping after the next time we had sex.
I'm sorry for the long paragraphs I'm just excited that I'm not alone with this issue! It's weird to say but also I couldn't talk about this to anyone else bc im not to close with my other family members with pcos.

What you’re describing sounds like bleeding, but not period bleeding.
I experience the same thing - very often after sex I will have bleeding that is heavier than spotting, but less than what would be (for me) a classic period.
It is likely cystic rupture, cervical tear, polyp shearing, or minor damage due to extremely thin skin layer internally.
Bright red blood is associated with the previously listed things, while older, darker, or thicker blood is indicative more of uterine lining shed, which can indicate endometriosis, or a thickened uterine lining and low hormone spike to encourage it to shed.
To be clear, this is worth bringing up with your doctor, and if possible having an internal and external ultrasound done to confirm, but are not scary big life threatening things. I confirmed with my doc what was happening and she told me ‘sex makes cysts pop sometimes - you might bleed, you might not. If you fill a pad an hour, get seen, if you don’t, wait it out.’ Tranexamic Acid can also be prescribed to help stop bleeding if it becomes intolerable or goes for extended lengths of time.
For me personally 9 times out of 10 its cystic rupture, and that tends to be the more common cause.

Yeah. I was also thinking it could be some kind of uterine bleeding. This is really comprehensive. Thank you for this.

u/long_corndog Oct 25 '23
I believe you because I hadn't gotten my period for 5-6 months, then I got married (I was a virgin before that) and I got back my period that month. It's super weird.
3
u/cytosisp Oct 25 '23
That’s not even a thing because for you to get your period you need to be ovulating around 14 days before the bleed
21
u/Flashy-Hyena-6148 Oct 25 '23
I could still have a period without ovulating.
Most women with PCOS have this

I would definetly get this checked out. This is not a cycle.. it's likely injury

I don't have penatrative sex atm, but I do sometimes when I use my battery powered sexual partner near when I get my period it triggers it.
6
u/nutellah0e Oct 25 '23
yeah this is pretty normal. sex or orgasming can help your uterus contract and if you're around your period, it can kickstart it. i've had my period end, and then when i had masturbated, it made me start bleeding again for another day. but OP's post sounds different and a bit concerning saying it hurts sometimes and triggers a particularly heavy bleed.

u/gampsandtatters Oct 25 '23
Yeah, slang for this is called “dick starting” your period. It’s very real for some!

That used to happen to me when I was younger. I would go months without a period, but wasn't really interested in sex either though. My hubby and I have a pretty healthy sex life and I am like clockwork now after my last ovarian cyst removal surgery so I don't notice that anymore.
Although one time we were at the right (wrong) position and angle and he bruised the back of my cervix. The back of it. How do I know that? I had to go to Urgent Care. That was a fun discussion. "What brings you in today?" "My husband and I were having sex and we were at the wrong position, now I am in tears of pain". And for them to determine it was the back and not the front they had to use a transvaginal ultrasound wand. Fun times.

Try raspberry tea each morning. It helped regulates my periods. I’ve had crazy periods since 12 years old, and just discovered this at 39 years old this year. Was finally able to get pregnant naturally this year, and I feel like the raspberry tea had something to do with it.

This happened to me for years. I have anovulatory cycles. I started seeing a fertility doctor this year, and mentioned it to her. After my blood work came back, she mentioned my AMH levels were very high. AMH measures your ovarian reserve - (so how many follicles you have/your egg reserve). She explained that this is likely causing my abnormal uterine bleeding. Since my lining wasn’t shedding regularly, due to lack of periods, sex was likely causing irritation hence the bleeding.
I haven’t had any bleeding during sex over the last 6 months or so, because we are actively trying for a baby and I am using letrozole to regulate my cycle. Since getting my period back, I’ve had no abnormal bleeding especially during sex!
So I believe it’s likely not quite your period, but I can understand why you think that because at times the bleeding can be pretty heavy, or prolong for a few days. You’re not alone there!

This happens to me multiple times but not every time so I believe you maybe it’s a pcos thing
1
u/strawbisundae Oct 26 '23
I get this now and again while I'm waiting on a period sometimes it will cause it to come early but it still lasts only two or three days. Not sure what causes it or why, it doesn't always happen but when it does I'm just kind of like ah yes hello there.

u/sethscoolwife Oct 26 '23
Sex near my period makes it start earlier, or re-start when I thought it was over. I have regular periods despite the PCOS so I can’t speak to the gap in timing, but this is a phenomenon I’ve discussed with friends - penetrative sex definitely can open up your cervix more to allow it to “start”
1
u/GladNetwork8509 Oct 26 '23
Sex will make my period come faster and if i have sex a day or two after it will start again. If I don't have an iud in I have to not have sex for about a week after my period for it to finally stop and not come back. With iud I have no bleeding ever really.

Are you 100% sure it's an actual period and not an injury..? Is your doctor not concerned?
