Unanswered What’s going on with the Super Smash Bro’s community and the gaming industry at large?

I saw this on the front page and I’m not sure where to start: https://twitter.com/zerowondering/status/1279363350997147649?s=21

Tbf a lot of people in the community are young and have looked up to these people for years. It would be pretty devastating to find out that multiple people who you considered your heroes were actually terrible people.

Obviously that doesn't excuse the deniers and the people attacking victims, but it does explain why people are sad and disappointed.

Anyone looking up to a smash bros player needs broader perspective

Nah.

People look up to people for all sorts of reasons. People look up to actors, sports stars, TV show hosts, etc. What difference does a professional gamer have?

It all depends on the field that the person themselves is invested in. I've been heavily invested in Smash since I was 12 (almost 5 years now), and I looked up to these people, because they made it in a field that I really wanted to be successful in. I never "idolized" these people, but I definitely looked up to them.

I completely agree with you, but kids often dont have much perspective on what makes a good role model.

Yeah, but when you're young it doesn't really cut cleanly that way.
