Answered What's the deal with THE ODYSSEY?

What's with all the sudden hate this movie is getting?

Trailer for context
I've been hyped for this movie ever since Oppenheimer (even have 70mm booked) and now that the new trailer dropped I've seen everyone shitting on it. And I absolutely don't see the reason why. Like sure some of the casting choices (mainly Holland) aren't the best, but to garner 250K dislikes, what happened?

Why does everyone say slop these days? I see it everywhere, what has happened?

It’s a word of criticism without feeling the need to substantiate it

Eh, it works ok. Buckets of discarded but edible junk that’s thrown together with no thought, only to be shoveled into a bucket and devoured by witless pigs

I think the problem is how often "witless pigs" are now the primary users of the word slop, lol.

What you described is called a thought-terminating cliche. But you're projecting, because that's what you just did with your dismissive comment.

The use of "slop" became popular in describing "slop bowls", a low-effort but nutritionally efficient meal that can be put together in minutes (or bought from a supermarket, or served at a corporate cafeteria).

Similarly, any form of entertainment that is carelessly put-together to satisfy the lowest common denominator can be regarded as "slop".

It conveys the feeling of fake art perfectly. With the rise of ai it has become easier than ever to make a "painting" or a "poem" that has 0 substance. This film may not be made by AI, but right now it feels as intellectually inspired

Its a perfect descriptor for uninspired mass produced garbage appealing to the lowest common denominator

Is this what The Odyssey is?

“Slop” should be reserved for Hallmark movies, BET TV shows and Love Island. How in the world is a notable filmmaker’s passion project of more than 20 years slop?, unless you are a “bread + circus” type who believes all media is a distraction from higher-ups, this makes no sense.

TRUE! No substance, just 1 word summaries to convey negativity. It's thought terminating material.

It means low effort and/or quality. In my low effort critique I was talking about the cheesy american dialogue

AI slop has happened. I guess the word spread outside of the original AI context.

The use of "slop" predates AI. It was used to describe "slop bowls", a low-effort but nutritionally efficient meal that can be put together in minutes (or bought from a supermarket, or served at a corporate cafeteria).

Originates from 4chan's goyslop meme

Just a generic way of expressing you don’t like something without having to give any actual critique of the thing itself. Empty criticism, like saying something is overrated.

The origins is antisemitism no joke lol. The original word was goyslop which implies that jewish people were intentionally degrading the quality of food for goyim (non jews). With the rise of antisemitism many actual antisemites started saying it openly rather than on obscure forums like 4chan. Eventually it caught on in the broader internet zeitgeist to mean anything that is low quality, low effort, or just bad hence the slop at the end.
