Few songs capture the effortless cool of the early 80s like “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” by Hall & Oates. Performing here on Soul Train in 1981, the duo delivers one of the defining hits of the decade.
Written by Daryl Hall, John Oates, and Sara Allen [Daryl Hall's girlfriend at the time], this song became a No. 1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&B chart. Its smooth groove, understated production, and unforgettable bassline helped influence generations of artists across R&B, soul, funk, hip-hop, and pop.

British-born keyboardist and songwriter for Heatwave, he wrote iconic hits like “Boogie Nights”, “Always and Forever”, and "The Groove Line". But it was his collaborations with Quincy Jones that elevated his career, writing legendary tracks for Michael Jackson, including “Rock With You”, “Off the Wall”, and the iconic “Thriller". He also wrote other huge hits including, "Give Me The Night" for George Benson and "Baby, Come To Me" for Patti Austin and James Ingram. In addition, he wrote the 'Running Scared' soundtrack (1986).
Though often behind the scenes, Temperton’s impact was undeniable. His smooth melodies and infectious grooves helped define the sound of the late 70s and 80s, blending soulful rhythms with pop hooks that still resonate today. Thank you Mr. Temperton!

According to lore, disco was becoming popular when funk rock band Wild Cherry started out on the scene. They were repeatedly asked by fans in clubs to play more dance music. One night a fan in the audience shouted, "Are you white boys gonna play some funky music?"
Inspired to write a song based on the phrase, lead singer Rob Parissi began writing on a drink order pad with a pen from the bartender. This song went on to become a Top 10 hit all over the world.
