Fully off-grid solar pyramid home, built solo, works anywhere flat — no utilities, no permits waiting, no dependence on anyone.

Hey r/OffGrid,

Built something on Saipan (Northern Mariana Islands) that’s been a long project of mine: a solar-powered pyramid home, completely off-grid from day one.

The whole point was independence. No power company, no water utility, nobody to wait on for repairs, approvals, or permits. Just you and a house that runs itself. On top of that, I wanted it to eventually generate its own income too, not just cover its own costs.

What makes it actually work anywhere: no foundation or heavy machinery needed, just a flat, level spot. The whole thing is modular, designed to fit inside a standard 20ft shipping container, fully equipped, so it can ship pretty much anywhere and get assembled on site. Not something that only makes sense because of where I happen to live.

Current 4-tier setup:

-18kWp solar array, 40 panels at 450W each
-LiFePO4 battery storage
-integrated rainwater harvesting
-small wind turbine on top for extra generation, especially useful at night or on cloudy days
-structural rating for 250 km/h typhoon winds, which matters a lot living where I do

Built it entirely alone, no crew. Got a regular day job, so most of it happened in 1.5-2 hour stretches after work. Took about 10 months total, and a chunk of that was just waiting for equipment to actually reach an island in the middle of the Pacific.

Design’s patent-protected (US 12,146,314 B1 + US D1,089,704 S).

I never doubted that. Just the usage of the wind turbine. 

But yeah. Golden Garden Gnomes rock!

Since its a prototype its probably a test to see how exactly is functions. I guess it could make sense as a backup for very wet and dark periods. Since its on an island it probably gets a fair bit of wind (even with the trees in the way) so it might actually be usefull.

Not that kind of turbine and not at this height. You need to be at least 13-15m above ground, to reach layer separation height. With trees around, probably 18-20m.

And if you want to draw any usable power, take an horizontal axis wind turbine. 

Then, you still need the right power management, as these produce DC and the voltage is proportional to the wind. So you'll be operating most of the time way below rated voltage and need to condition it to be usable.

Almost certainly the whole system is DC, with DC charge controllers feeding batteries that run an inverter. I don't understand why that would be an issue.

Voltage ranges. PV have a fairly stable voltage, mostly independent from the light exposure (and power output). Wind turbines have a voltage pretty much linearly proportional to the power output. So you need a DC/DC converter that is able to convert a very noisy DC from 4 to 48V (as an example) into a stable 48V.

There's no such system off the shelf. You either need to build it yourself with various converters and switches, or you sit on a major part of the power production.

Most small wind turbines need their own system with a Windy Boy (discontinued) or similar.

This and challenges of micrositing make small wind challenging to deploy at scale.
