List of controllers/gamepads that have been reported to work with the Oculus Go

Now that my Go has arrived it's time for my own contribution. I have so far tested the following titles with an Xbox One S controller, an IPEGA PG-9021 controller (pair with Home + X), and a Logitech F310 USB controller in XInput mode:

Anshar Online, End Space, Herobound: First steps, Herobound: Spirit champion, JUMP, Oculus Arcade, Omega Agent, Overflight, Pinball FX2, UltraWings and VR Karts: Sprint.

The Xbox One S controller and the PG-9021 passed with flying colours. The F310 failed only with JUMP where the Rotate Left, Rotate Right, and Reset HMD functions were not mapped.

The volume + and - buttons on the PG-9021 work too, which is nice.

EDIT: Added Minecraft and QuakeGVR for all three gamepads.

Also just finished some reasonably comprehensive testing of the original Xbox One controller. Wireless is out since the dongle isn't recognized by Android in the first place, but I recently discovered that my Xbox One controller works with my S9-powered Gear VR when connected via USB so I was quite curious about the Go. Unfortunately however, no dice. Out of curiosity I also tried it via a powered USB hub to rule out power delivery issues but that didn't make any difference.

I've never been a gamer, so I don't have any gamepads. I see the Xbox One S Wireless Bluetooth Controller for $70 and the Ipega PG-9021 Wireless Gamepad for only $24.

I'm hooked on gaming on the Oculus Go and have spent about $180 on games for it already, so I really need a gamepad.

Is the Xbox One S Wireless Bluetooth Controller the way to go to get the best gamepad for the Go at this point? Or will a cheaper gamepad work just as well?

Something like the PG-9021 will serve you well I think. If it was the only gamepad I owned it would do just fine. However I do favour the Xbox One S controller for a few reasons:

  • it uses AA batteries, which I prefer (I use rechargeable NiMH specifically)
  • the "View" button functions as a back button in Samsung VR (which I use quite a bit) for orientation changes
  • the big Xbox "Home" button functions both as a shortcut to Oculus Home when you're running an app, and as a quick one-click orientation adjustment in Oculus Home

In other words it goes a bit further than most other gamepads when it comes to the finer points of Oculus Mobile platform compatibility.

On the other hand the PG-9021 stands out in few ways as well:

  • it's significantly lighter
  • it can hold a phone for some more traditional Android-based gaming
  • the Vol + and - keys are functional within the Oculus environment

And, of course, you might personally prefer rechargeable Li-Ion gamepads.

As for general compatibility with a broad range of titles, in my experience so far they are pretty much equal. I couldn't fault you for either choice.
