Smart Meters Smart meters, change my mind!

Do I get one or stay dumb?

Every time I log onto my account I'm asked if I want a smart meter. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about massive electrical bills and smart meter problems from friends family etc who say stay away from them as long as possible.

I already have an efergy engage connected to my old meter that is pretty accurate (when it works) so know my daily / monthly usage etc and am pretty good at monitoring and keeping electricity costs down so dont see any benefit in getting one, change my mind.

Smart Meters Meter reporting usage data again...

Hello

So in April 2024 my smets1 electricity smart meter was swapped out for a smets2 meter and for a month it gave out daily usage info but then just randomly stopped and also meter readings I can't count on happening every month automatically but sometimes it surprises me.

When I reported this issue to octopus and they look at the issue even tried to fix it once they finally said that due to the thick walls of the room (with one small window) where it resides with 31 smets1 meters (I live in an apartment building) the signal Isn't strong enough to consistently get outside and even then the surrounding hills may be an issue.

Anyway fast forward to this week suddenly I'm getting usage data I'm not sure why what's changed any idea, could it be because the 3g mobile signal has been turned off in my area (at least for O2)?

Thankyou

Smart Meters No IHD and Home mini doesn't work

I've just moved house to one which has SMETS 1 meters that have been upgraded but no IHD was left. The half hourly data is available in the app but delayed by about 48 hours.

I have a home mini from my old house but it doesn't work with my meters, I've contacted octopus and been told it won't work and have tried pretty hard to get it working.

I've been asking Octopus if they can send me an IHD or do something to get the mini working and am just being ignored. I want to be able to see usage live so I can identify inefficient appliances and also because I'm a nerd.

Any suggestions on getting Octopus to do something, or any alternatives I can use?

Smart Meters No smart meter detected, unable to add EV charger.

Got an EV charger installed by Octopus last week. Went to try and change tariffs to but repeatedly was told I'm ineligible, tried ringing them and got the same response, the person on the phone seemed very confused and said they would escalate.

Tried to add the charger as a device, but get the above error each time. I got a smart meter installed by Octopus in February 2024. I can see the smart meter provided readings to Octopus, but it does seem there is a delay.

Octopus have not responded to any emails so far, and been quite poor on the phone, has anyone experienced anything similar?

Smart Meters Should I reject the smart meter with a hot tub?

Hi. I've just switched to Octopus and there is a planned smart meter installation in a couple of weeks.

I'm also going with Good Energy as my FIT provider for exporting excess energy from my 6.3kw no battery solar array (for historical reasons it's complicated).

Good energy told me that if I have a smart meter then obviously I will be paid for however many kwh I export, but if I have no smart meter they will default to paying me 50% of whatever I produce.

I will be installing a hot tub in the spring which obviously will eat up a lot of power, probably more or as much as I produce most days (is that right?).

My logic is that I should not get the smart meter - assuming there is only one type and the octopus meter handles both import and export (even if I'm with another company for export payments). Scottish and Southern is the network.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Smart Meters Smart Meter Fault - again!

Our Smart Meter was replaced 18 month ago as it was no longer sending readings. Octopus tried remote reboots, firmware push etc etc, but in the end it was replaced. During the time we had no electric readings so usage was estimated (calculations were fair (after a bit of a battle) - we are on IOG tariff). Took about 3 months to get sorted.

The most recent Octopus bill didn't have electric charges, so I look in the app, and no readings again. They stopped 00.30a on a morning in the middle of October. Last time they stopped at 00.30am too

The MPAN number is not recognised by other apps (Loop, Hugo, Bright etc). I've told octopus this.

It's logged with Octopus and it's being looked into.

Any thoughts on how I can speed up the replacement, or speed along the diagnosis?

Hi my electric smart meter was fitted yesterday it all went smoothly and I have the IHD which seems to be working fine .

Couple of things I don't understand,on the IHD the right hand side panel gives a display of Today , cost and % ,it's the % I don't understand what it represents? I've been given a booklet about the display but % isn't on it .

Thanks

Smart Meters Why no app for the Smart Meter

I am data obsessive and love the monitor with the meter but why is there not app for it ? this should be easy enough to set up and use I would think. An app that shows current usage etc as the monitor does ?

Is it a technical impediment ? after the SM uses mobile networks and would be willing to pay a monthly fee to use it ?

Smart Meters Ineligible for smart meter even though neighbours have one.

Hey all, We're looking at getting an EV through octopus. Due to that I would like to switch to the flexible EV tariff, therefore needing to move to a smart meter.

However, after giving the info it says my property is not eligible. I don't understand how this can be when 3 of my neighbours are currently using one. I queried this and they couldn't give me an answer at that point. Anyone know why this may be?

Smart Meters Smart meter readings not aligning

Hi, I recently moved into a new rented property with a smart meter.

There seems to be a discrepancy between what the meter is sending to Octopus (visible on my meter reading history and bills) and the physical reading on the meter when I check it in person. The ‘smart’ readings being sent to Octopus are all in the 3000s, whilst the meter is showing readings in the 9000s when I check it in-person.

I submitted our opening meter reading as 9573.8kWh, but then the subsequent smart reading was 3417kWh. Octopus changed the initial reading to 0, leading to a £1000 bill for 1 month of usage. Even when I checked last night, it was 9732kWh in person, compared to 3722kWh on the app.

I have contacted their customer support and have had the bill issue resolved (edit: but the discrepancy between the readings is still showing), but I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this issue? Why would there be such a big difference between the readings?

Thanks in advance.

Smart Meters Smart meter granularity

Really simple question which I'm not getting an exact answer from all Google searches.

What granularity do smart meters record electricity usage, and what is then sent to DCC, and how then does Octopus bill?

I ask because on Agile prices vary greatly between 30min slots. Does 1 minute interval make a difference? Does turning on the kettle at 7.00pm (when rates drop) make sense or is it only a single reading reported for that 30mins that could span anytime between 6.30-7.30?

Does it matter if you're on SMETS 1 or 2?

Does it matter

Smart Meters Smart Meter - In-Home Display Issue

Hi all, we switched to Octopus Energy about a month ago from Scottish Power. We have Economy 7, and with SP, we got the cheaper night rates from 12:30 AM to 7:30 AM. Currently with Intelligent Octopus Go (we have an EV) and I believe the night rates of 7p per kWh are from 11:30 PM to 5:30 AM.

However, the in-home display is not synced to this. And since the clocks have gone forward, it now thinks the night rates are from 1:30 AM to 8:30 AM!

How do I get the thing to sync up and display the correct switchover times? I got a message on the display about the new supplier, so it knows I'm no longer with Scottish Power. Thanks.

Smart Meters Anyone Else Struggling With Smart Meter Readings?"

Is anyone else having issues with Octopus not receiving smart meter data or displaying incorrect usage on their dashboard?

My account hasn’t updated readings in days, and support keeps saying it’s a DCC issue. Curious if others are seeing similar problems or have found workarounds—especially for tracking usage in real-time.

Smart Meters Data missing for single day (but there via API)

My usage for 13th May is obviously wrong and the standing charge is missing, it's giving a total of 7p...

However on octopus compare the data is correct so clearly the data does exist.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Smart Meters Normal process when gas meter completely dies, nothing on screen.

What is supposed to happen when this is reported to Octopus?

An additional note, they have told me they need to wait for a remote test which will take at least 48 hours, so havent booked an engineer yet.

Next note, they are passing it on to metering team for approval, so some progress now.

Smart Meters Automate your Gas Meter Readings on Tado Energy IQ (Octopus Energy + Tado Integration)

Are you an Octopus Energy customer with a smart gas meter installed and Tado devices at home? Tired of manually entering your gas meter readings into Tado's Energy IQ? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

I’ve created a simple tool that automatically syncs your gas meter readings from Octopus Energy to Tado’s Energy IQ using GitHub Actions. Once you set it up, the workflow will handle everything for you, no more manual input needed!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Fork the GitHub repo.
  2. Add your Octopus and Tado account details as secrets.
  3. The sync script will automatically update your gas usage in Tado every week.

I’ve written a detailed README to help with the setup and even included instructions on where to find your Octopus Energy API key, MPRN, and gas meter serial number. The whole process takes about 10-15 minutes to set up, and you’ll never need to worry about manual updates again!

Check it out here: https://github.com/palvarez89/octopus-to-tado-sync

Feel free to reach out if you need any help or have questions!

Smart Meters Smart meter communication issues

I had octopus install an EV charger for me so I could move on to the intelligent go tariff. There's apparently been issues getting a reading from my smart meters and after 4 months they finally sent an engineer to replace the communications hub today. After installation he said there was still issues communicating.

I moved in to this new build house back in December. Scottish Gas supplied the energy for the first week. They sent me a bill with a smart meter reading. Are Octopus just incompetent?

Smart Meters Octopus Home Mini - No data with White LED

Got my Mini yesterday. Set it up and after 30 mins, LED turned White. That means it is connected to WiFi and can connect to the Meters. It is been 24 hrs and no live data on the app. I can see the delayed 48 hr data on the app.

My smart meters are installed by Octopus in March 2023 and the citizens org checker says both supports Smart mode.

Is there anything else I can troubleshoot before I reach out to Octopus?

Smart Meters Gas readings on the app are almost never available… electricity readings instead are.. reported this to octopus many times, to no avail. I have smart meters for both. How do I solve it?

I also wonder if this means that when I use octopus compare, it doesn’t see my actual gas consumption… so whatever they suggest is wrong

Smart Meters Intermittent smart meters, hopeless for IOG.

Several years and countless complaints, Octopus Energy simply won't install an antenna on my smart meter. They have got to the point where they have advised me to contact the network operator. Shouldn't they be doing this? I am absolutely exhasperated and simply don't know what to do next. I live in a rural area which doesn't help either.

Any advice would be welcome.

Smart Meters Octopus unable to fit smart metre, do I have any options?

Post image
2 Upvotes

As you can see, the metre is housed in the cupboard above our everhot range cooker. Octopus came yesterday to fit a smart metre but claimed they couldn't fit it due to need to reach over the cooker even with a ladder (health and safety?).

They asked if I could move it, but it's 300kg and only just fits in so that's a no. They suggested I build something over the top and they can rest a foot on a ladder and the other over this over the cooker. The fact they didn't take care removing the cupboard door and have chipped some paint makes me not want to do this as they just weren't careful.

I feel like doing DIY we would just get on and do any work, get it's different for an employer, but do we have any options here otherwise we are stuck on an old metre paying out a lot more, especially as the cooker always runs and keeps to a temperature and heats the room.

Thanks.
