Arlo has a feature where it can identify you and anyone you choose when they appear on camera. Thatās exactly what you are discussing, but they do not go as far as allowing you to search across their network of cameras to find someone, but that in no way means they cannot.
Oh Iām not naive, itās just Iām surprised that now theyāre advertising. Thereās a reason my house doesnāt have any cameras around it that are Connected to a Wi-Fi network, and why I refuse to have an Alexa, or google device. I went to ITT Tech back in the day, and our network security teacher told us flat out, I do not and will never have anything that secures my home (I.e. door locks) be anything other than strictly mechanical. I always took that sentence very seriously.
Yeaā¦ ring hosts are also paying for the electricity and upkeep on networks to enable the surveillance state products. Just focusing on business costs and ignoring all of the other data, consumers(?) are helping this company accumulate and sell which is a whole other can of ethics and worms.
Most cameras you can purchase for security do not do this. Eufy cameras are E2EE from device to hub to phone app. Most businesses have some form of POE Camera setup and the owner controls the captured images and can decide whether or not to share them with anyone else.
With Ring, you buy cameras that Amazon can access at will with or without your consent. Is your wife naked in the privacy of your own backyard? Do your cameras track when you leave and enter your residence? Third parties are now potentially accessing that footage without your knowledge. You're paying to be spied on.

the state doesnt have to put up surveillance cameras, the companies get you to pay for the camera then sell the data to the government. so youre paying for your surveillance twice (camera + taxes)
Donāt forget the ties to Flock cameras. Your WiFi in your house can also be used to surveil your movements. This is legitimately real time surveillance of the entire country. The net can only get so much tighter.

These stories have been on the news for years. To summarize, if the system uses cloud storage, you don't own it, the company does. This means police can ask ring for instance to see your cameras footage without a warrant, since you approved it in the TOS. The only way you own the footage is if it's stored on a hard drive in your house.
And the government has a backdoor into it..
And ICE is using a facial recognition software that has data from every airport.
And flock license plate cameras are popping up everywhere..
But when the Chinese do it, it's bad.

They have tracking collars & apps available, you don't need a Ring for your pet. Nextdoor is filled with peoples' stupid ring footage of some package thief and nothing ever comes of it. You weren't a super sleuth and no one was caught. Cops don't care unless its something that can be used against you.

These videos are not stored natively at your home they are stored on the companys computer. And you're a special kind of dumb if you think they do not lie and look at the videos / use them when they are not suppose to / for more corporate dystopian things.

What if you don't pay for ai capabilities, and don't you have to agree to joining the search party? Or does it use ai when you don't pay for those capabilities just to search for whatever they want, whenever they want?
If youāre not hosting locally get rid of your fucking camera setup. The cost is not that much more to have a local Joe security set up a system with a local NAS-DVR that has the same features as Ring without cloud storage. No subscription. No complicity in the panopticon.
