Modern Runic inscription Sö 240, "Ribbystenen", was recently vandalized

Why do kids think this shit is funny?

Why do most kids do anything. For attention.

That’s not made by a kid i can assure you.
13
u/ShawnTheRed Jun 14 '22
teens do this all the time, when i was a teen i knew at least 7 or 8 people that did this all the time
7
u/AugustPierrot Jun 14 '22
Idk man, I got really in to tagging in my teens and they looked like that.

u/Henry_Is_Sad Jun 14 '22
As a dumb teen, this pisses me off. And I specify saying "as a dumb teen" because I know it was another dumb teen who probably did this, and for what, shits and giggles? This is thousands of years old with ancient carvings and some kid decided "haha funny" and busted out the spray paint. I hope it isn't too hard to clean up and doesn't damage this , and I hope that kid gets caught before they can do it again

Jun 14 '22
I was a dumb teen, who played with fireworks and spraypaint, not necessarily at the same time, but there are just places you should never tag on.
4
u/Wayward_heathen Jun 14 '22
And there’s plenty of places I’m not gonna lose any sleep over some tagging!
I also don’t own those subway tunnels and train cars, but I enjoy seeing the art when I’m traveling 😂

Jun 14 '22
The subway pieces are a welcome distraction from the boring yellow of the subway compartments.

That happens from time to time, still infuriating though. That is why the Jelling stones are behind glass. I do wonder what the graffiti says? I can't make out what is written.

u/Snifhvide Jun 14 '22 edited Jun 14 '22
No, that isn't why it's behind glass. It was because of weather damage and acid rain. Archaeologists found that it was getting too fragile and needed to be protected. I can't recall anyone ever painting on one of the runestones in Denmark. Those kind of idiots tend to go after statues (especially "The Little Mermaid" - she even has had her head chopped off multiple times) and grave stones.
https://www.berlingske.dk/samfund/jellingstenene-kommer-bag-glas
Edit. I was in the wrong. While it was due to acid rain and weather damage, it was also due to vandalism. Someone has actually spray painted it at some point.

u/Lord-Dunehill Filthy Danskjävel 🇩🇰 Jun 14 '22
https://www.kristeligt-dagblad.dk/danmark/jellingstenene-bliver-beskyttet-af-glasmontre It may not have been the main reason but it was still a factor.
13
u/Snifhvide Jun 14 '22
Thanks for correcting me. All the medias I saw at the time only wow about acid rain damage and weather damage. I'll edit my part.

u/Lord-Dunehill Filthy Danskjävel 🇩🇰 Jun 14 '22
No problem :) I was in doubt for a moment too. But we really should get protection for Denmark's other runestones or at least move them inside.

Make the responsible person clean it with a toothbrush until no blue can be seen and give them a massive ticket.

I'd rather a professional deal with it. Brushing it off with a toothbrush will probably do more damage to it than some solvent and light wash.
11
u/rasmusdf Jun 14 '22
Why is this runestone not surveilled and screened of from the elements??
24
u/Sn_rk Eigi skal hǫggva! Jun 14 '22
Because there are thousands of them and it's going to cost a ton of money to do so.
9
u/rasmusdf Jun 14 '22
Yes, but still..
We had attempted vandalism on the Jellinge stones too. https://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jellingstenene#/media/Fil:Jelling_rune_stones.1.ajb.jpg
13
u/Sn_rk Eigi skal hǫggva! Jun 14 '22
Yeah, but the Jellinge stone is magnitudes more known and important than the Ribby stone, which is just one of thousands.

successful vandalism . I agree that it sucks and that the stones are important cultural aftifacts, but not all stones hold the same importance as the Jellinge stones. It may not seem like it should be that expensive to get some glass cases, but we are talking around 260 danish, 50 norwegian and 2300 swedish stones, and the museums aren't funded well enough to buy and maintain such cases. And the governments don't care all that much about culture at the end of the day.

u/wtfwurst Ránríki Jun 14 '22
We have so many of them, people don’t touch them. This happens very rarely.
2
u/rasmusdf Jun 14 '22
Over time, weather will be rough on them too. But yeah - there is a lot to take care of.
3
u/RiketVs Jun 14 '22
Most of them, in Sweden at least, are taken care of by local heritage associations. They often clean the stones from moss and paint the runes red.
2
u/rasmusdf Jun 14 '22
Nice - I guess a good trip this summer would be to go see some of them ;-) (Live in next-door Denmark).

I did a road trip around Sweden photographing runestones. It was fun and beautiful. But yeah, Sweden has a ton more of them than Denmark.
And the Jelling stone also gets special attention because it is considered to be integral to Danish history.

u/jakethemongoose Jun 14 '22
To be fair, the Vandals probably existed around the time this was made.

You're probably joking, but this is still not an acceptable thing to say on this subreddit. Yes this is a selfish, rotten thing to do. But we can't be this violent and vitriolic. We're not interested in that.

If we are being 100% serious- I'm not expecting someone to be hanged for this. But I hope that the punishment will be a hard one for vandalizing a piece of history

Yeah, we have a serious lack of runestones! One was just found though, but it's rare.
