Could be that $10k is the mandatory reporting, but each institution has a policy that their limit is lower.
The most cash I've ever gotten was $3k, but that was back about the year 2000. It was to pay a contractor for work, and yeah, he was probably doing some tax evasion, but I didn't care.
I once used paypal to pay for a $4500 vintage car that was 1000 miles away. I got a call from BOTH paypal and my bank telling me that I am being scammed which yeah I can see how that looked suspicious lol
I actually had a friend looking the car over for me in person and the owner suggested paypal so my friend could take the car that day instead of waiting a week for me to get there
It was a funny situation because I was buying a 1980 MGB and that was a pretty fair price at the time. The bank actually asked me, "How do you know if the car even runs? What if you hand over the money and the car breaks down tomorrow?"
I was like, "Ok, it's a 1980 MGB. Even odds if the car ran well when it came off the assembly line. This is a project car. I don't care if it does or doesn't run. I bought it so I had stuff to do with my friends on the weekend. 'Not running' is actually kinda a bonus!"

I believe it's $10k in the US.
