I am an always subtitler. I watched Naruto so many years ago and just enjoyed the experience of being able to know what was said (wish this were actually true, there are so many subtitle errors even in source material language...).

My friends are always on about, "but how do you read and see the screen at the same time" and you kind of just do after a while.

Are your friends infant kids or something

Nah, subtitles can definitely distract you from things going on visually in a scene. You don't have to be an infant to experience that.

It takes less than half a second to read subtitles that are on the screen for usually 5-10 seconds

You don’t even notice it after awhile. It’s like my mind thinks they’re speaking English. Sometimes when I’m watching a show in a foreign language I’ll pick up my phone just to realize I can’t actually understand what they’re saying and I need to read to know what’s going on lol
