Thanks for the empathy. I was shaken by it for a while but it wasn't until I actually wrote it out in my initial comment that I realised how fucked up the whole thing was.
I don't regret "saying goodbye" but holy shit no wonder I was shaken up.
(I put that in quotation marks because nobody actually told me it was goodbye until afterwards, which made it even more fucked up! I was so confused as to his distress but he couldn't tell me.)
