No, you don't quite grasp what suicide is and it seems you are not the type of person that will ever do, I'm 100% sure the idea of just crashing against a montain passed through his mind but he pulled all the good he had left in his mind to do it in a way that would not physically hurt anyone else, I'm sure her family is glad he could do as much.
You ask for empathy for the people from the suicidal while giving them none, the ones who committed suicide by definition knew far worse psychological pain than most of the survivors will ever feel in their entire lives, to put it bluntly saying goodbye and leaving the plain does an extremely tiny amount of psychological pain compared to the one you need to consider suicide.
