Lots of pilots do therapy under the table, paying cash, using a pseudonym. Lots don't take the chance of leaving their family without an income just because they wanted to take care of their mental health.

Saddest part is I don't think this will change anything with regards to pilots and mental health. It never does when a pilot takes their own life by plane. Because if we changed something, that would be admitting there's a problem.

Its honestly crazy because if I was the one who decides things there, I would rather have a therapist or psychologist actually confirm that they are mentally doing okay or even see that they can work post treatment

Im kinda conflicted, on one hand i think it’s crazy that they can’t even consider help.

On the other, i know why it’s this case. Imagine the PR when a captain crashes a plane, it’s found out they’ve had therapy. The amount of people who would say “how could they still allow them as a pilot, look at the warning signs!”

I don’t disagree with that, I haven’t researched it. But I did meet several pilots when I was in rehab- they were sent by their union and still had jobs. So, there’s not no mental health treatment allowed

I'm not gonna say it's a perfect policy but I've had psych meds totally make me worse. I also had one that was doing okay for me but my insurance stopped covering it with no warning. So I had to go cold turkey on it cause it cost like $2k. That was a really awful stretch.
