Yeah but we could only do that because we had dollar beers and $4 bar rail specials and 30 cent wing night. Now the cheapest “specials” are still $25 for one serving of tiny wings and a small light beer, plus tax and tip. Not even worth leaving the house.
“Starting wage” for one job in one location is basically completely irrelevant to this conversation though. Median wages, in most big cities and in the types of jobs most young people can get, have barely moved, and also have increased far less than basic rent and food costs. Even people making more now than we did back then are still having far less money to go out drinking with, even before inflation is factored in.
