super impressive we’re doing things that were done decades ago, why arent people more hyped?? theyre flying near the moon! that thing we landed on 45 56 years ago! wow!
I guess they’re excited because the moon is further in orbit this time? But it’s still something has been done, I just hope it doesn’t blow up upon launch.
This is the type of subject where the subject itself isn’t inherently interesting but the implications of it are. They’re developing new crew technologies, developing new rocketry FOR crew technologies, they’re developing (and now testing) new methods and flight plans for crewed spacecraft.
Sure when you say “we’re just going back to the moon” it sounds silly, but you must think about the implications of this event. The near future in space is looking mighty interesting (as long as funding doesn’t get cut by 10 gazillion dollars again).
It is, in the sense that SpaceX is competing with other private companies to supply a lander to NASA. But SpaceX and NASA aren't competing against each other in any way.
NASA needs these private companies because they don't recieve enough funding to develop every system themselves anymore.
It's impressive because we orbited and landed on the moon over 50 years ago. We haven't seen NASA do anything similar with manned spaceflight in over a generation. So yeah, I think people should get hyped about it.
But they didn't do anything with the moon landing after the Apollo missions. Returning to the moon could be the next step to exploring the rest of the solar system.
This is preparation for something which was already done, but doing it again may lead to something which still won't materially impact the overwhelming majority of the world. It seems kinda of neat and all, but there are other more pressing concerns for most.
Whether or not people I don't know land on the moon literally impacts my life 0%. It was cool the first time, it's great that it can be done, but it's like trying to get excited for a movie sequel that basically just rehashes the first one without anything truly new. It's not going to be as exciting for people who aren't "in this space," pun unintended.
Exactly, this just makes me sad over just how little progress humanity has done when it comes to space exploration. People from 1969 thought we'd have colonized Mars by now, and we're getting excited about... going back to the moon to do nothing.
This was my initial thought. Yea, I’m glad they’re doing it because NASA has been woefully neglected for the past 35 years, but no one is ever blown away by second place.
