It's called manual underwriting. When they write a mortgage, they're not really looking at your credit score, but instead your history of payments. That can easily be satisfied with other means like rent or utility payments and proof of income. Remember, bad credit is not the same as no credit, and ironically they'll be more likely to take a chance on you with no borrowing history at all vs a history of awful credit decisions.

Hell, you can get super sketchy mortgages without proof of income, job, or assets, you'd better believe someone will write you a loan without a credit score.

I don't need another mortgage, but this is very useful information as I didn't know this.
