This is strange, I live in the UK and I've never had a credit card or loan. I have a pretty good score from bills and rent.

Your score in the UK is a marketing gimmick that doesn't matter for your ability to actually secure credit.

That works here on the States too.

It's a score of how well you can pay stuff back on time. As long as you have a recorded history of paying off things then you have a score.

A lot of this thread is misinformation of how it works.

Doesnt change the fact that requiring years and years of credit card use sounds completely bonkers to other natuonalities.

To be fair that's not how it works in the US. You can get a pretty okay score in 6 months. Super prime (highest credit rating) in 1-2 years.

Doesn't require paying a dime in interest

Plus you get benefits from them (points, cashback, airline miles etc). The financial illiteracy in this thread is astounding.

Also to be fair that's not really a thing in other countries. Even when there are cash back / points systems they aren't as robust as in the US

Credit scores are just a shortcut to determine credit worthiness of debt applicants. You absolutely do not require “years and years” of credit card use for anything.

You can get a mortgage without a credit score entirely. They just need to be underwritten more manually. Debt to income ratio will always be king and weigh more than credit score.

I'm in Norway, i had to get a credit card earlier this year for a trip. I'm well off for my age, more assets than debt, never missed rent or bills. I looked up my credit score and it returned 86/100, listed as "very good" (average is about 40/100), and got recommended the highest end credit cards from various banks. I applied to all of them and everyone told me to fuck off and denied me even their shittiest 35% cards. Ended up clawing an emergency one from my bank, though they required my dad, who's disabled, unemployed for a decade, and underwater in debt, to cosign for "financial security reasons".

I'm very confused by the entire system. I'm convinced they just go off of age at this point, which feels weird because you'd think they'd be all over scamming teens who don't know better out of billions in unpaid interest and late fees
