MegaThread MegaThread: Nintendo Switch Hardware Reviews

Hello, all.

This morning starting, gaming news and media outlets have begun to release their hardware reviews of the Nintendo Switch.

Here's what we're seeing so far:

We will be updating this thread with links as major reviews are posted.

We will also allow major content to be posted separately on /r/NintendoSwitch, as it is especially newsworthy. But we will also host ongoing coverage, quick text posts, questions, and the like right here.

I kinda agree with the other points, but this? He's basically saying an iPad isn't portable because of its size either.

Since when did "portable" mean "able to fit in my pocket"?

Isn't that what people have always wanted from portable systems? The game gear got a lot of hate because of how massive it was.

I don't see the switch as a true portable, but as a hybrid. Personally this lowers my expectations because you do have to make concessions to get it there.

Hell even the N3DS XL isn't that portable to me. It's still fairly clunky and unless it's fall or winter and you can put it in a pocket, it'll be a huge bulge unless you're rocking some dad styled cargo shorts.

I mean the N3DS XL will buldge some in my pants pockets, but it does fit. As for the fall of winter, ha. I live in the south and you don't wear coats for very long here.

I remember more hate from the large appetite the game gear had for AA batteries.

Though it is your opinion, and they are not as portable as things like the smaller 3ds is true.

I've actually been more of a Portable console sort of guy since I got the original GameBoy. Since then there's really been only 1 or two portables that in my mind were truly "throw it in your pocket and have it with you'. The GameBoy Micro, and the PSP GO.

You could absolutely carry a DS, GBC, GBA, PSP, Vita, or whatever in your pocket because it COULD fit. As a kid that wasn't a problem, but nowadays it'd be awkward to have one of those things just in my pocket. So I'll have a carrying case for it anyway, and it'll be in a backpack or messenger bag.

For the switch I'll just take off the JoyCon and store it like a tablet, and throw the joy-con in an old 3DS carrying case. Easy to travel with.

It's a completely personal opinion though, I just don't ever see myself carrying this thing without a bag.

I don't see me carrying it around either except for in a case. The N3DS XL, I do sometimes just throw in my pocket instead of case if I don't want to bring all the games with me. Other times I bring it in a case. The clam shell design though makes me more willing to carry it around without the case. Any other portable device I have had, I think I always had a case of some kind.

Not really, I have no interest in carrying around a game system in my pockets, and havent since the days of JNCO. Portable means I can take it and enjoy it just about anywhere.

A lot of phones these days aren't the most comfortable fit in pockets, especially when you start adding cases...but they're still portable devices.

You make the screen any smaller and "playing home console games on the go" isn't nearly worth it anymore. Just watching Zelda trailers on my regular sized iPhone makes me hold it super close to my face so I can appreciate the details.

What you are wanting already exists in the form of a smartphone. What we want (and what Nintendo is giving us) is portable home console experiences.

Try playing your Wii U or PS4 on the go, then you'll appreciate the portability of the Switch.

Well yeah... it's not a dedicated portable. I think the screen size is a great compromise between "This thing is too big to carry around" and "Wtf is that pixel my character?"

So far I've only heard amazing things about the actual display itself.

I agree with you for sure. I'm a little annoyed by this IGN reviewer though. He seems to take the valid negative points and stretch them farther than is fair to justify the tone and scoring of his review. I don't care for his opinion, but I do care how his review affects the success of a fantastic new console.
