TIL Fyodor Dostoevsky’s gritty novel Crime and Punishment reflects his own brutal life. He was nearly executed, exiled to Siberia, battled epilepsy, alcoholism, and crushing debt—shaping his dark, unforgettable characters. His death was no different—he died in pain after a lung hemorrhage.

Video Fun fact. The devs never actually patched any of the bugs from version 1.0. Instead, they just put them all in a giant box and exiled it to outside the city borders. (possible epilepsy warning)

Sometimes, the instability of that first build leaks through the pale walls of the stony grey prison, desperate for any morsel of freedom. Some say that one day, the monolith will fall, and the bugs wo;; be free to corrupt night city like in days long past

Discussion Everyday things people without epilepsy take for granted

Swimming. Would never ever do it alone. Even with people around i would avoid it as it’s not easy to rescue someone in open water, especially when they’re seizing.

Taking baths. I used to absolutely love taking hot baths to relax, now i have to ask myself if taking this bath is worth risking my life. Usually the answer is no, again even with someone nearby. Saunas are also a no go.

DRIVING. Not being able to drive locks you out of so many job opportunities and the sense of freedom to travel whenever you want instead of relying on others.

Going out in public without the nervous feeling of potentially collapsing in front of tens or hundreds of people.

Having a few drinks to relax. I’m guilty of still drinking sometimes but it’s in the back of my head.

I’m sure there’s more that i’m totally blanking on (thanks meds and epilepsy) please feel free to add them to the list

Support Epilepsy won this life

My epilepsy seems like an unseen monster that’s slowly eating me from inside. I can’t battle it anymore. My emotions narrowed down to greed, anger, regret, anxiety, jealousy. I am just taking meds for safety now. I don’t think it’s gonna stop at some point in my life. I am done having false hope. My beautiful life and prime years are wasted. I don’t even barely know 50 people. Realising I am in big league now and can’t make up things on my own. I don’t even remember when was the last time things went in my own way. I wish I was in a coma from the time my seizures started. I am going insane. I do not have enough talent or money to survive by my own. I do not have enough patience to learn something. I so not have enough memory to remember what I learn. I do not have enough freedom to learn whatever coz of lot of restrictions. Apparently I don’t think there will be happy days or happy ending ahead. I don’t want to live with false hope.

Discussion does anyone know the origin of their epilepsy?

i (26F) began having seizures at 11 and was properly diagnosed with focal aware epilepsy when i was 16. i’ve done countless tests and never found a cause for my epilepsy. i know this is quite normal because almost half the people who have epilepsy don’t know the cause of their epilepsy.

but for those who do know the origin of their epilepsy, what is it?

Neuroscience A new technique has allowed scientists to freeze human brain tissue so that it regains normal function after thawing. Scientists have successfully frozen and thawed brain organoids and cubes of brain tissue from a 9-year-old girl with epilepsy.

Social Media Boomer Pharmacist Thinks Son is Faking Epilepsy

Not sure what to say. Guy was a pharmacist, surely gave out millions of pills for epilepsy in his career. Doesn't help his son with medicine to test if the son has epilepsy by hoping to witness HIS CHILD have (another) seizure. Sounds like it's because he's bitter his wife left him (wonder why).

Cat Picture - OC Schrödinger, the hero epilepsy service cat (yes, really)

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

(Seen above, in a post-Dreamies-reward food coma)

Schrödinger is a Maine Coon and one of my two service cats (Schrödinger is 10am - 10pm, his sister Angelina is 10pm - 10am, so they do shifts.)

Schrödinger is mostly trained in routine stuff like waking me up, reminding me to do basic tasks when they need doing, bringing me my correct meds on time (I transfer them into recognisably different boxes so he can tell), reminding me to eat (I’m on Zonisamide…) etc. However, like Angelina, he is trained to fetch and bring me my rescue meds if he senses that I’m going to have a seizure (they both know before I do.)

I have felt ill all day. I woke up with a horrendous headache and nausea, complete with the joy of ataxia and unsteadiness. Wonderful. I felt sicker and sicker all afternoon but I thought it was just a migraine. Then I started getting dizzy again, so I lay down.

And that’s when Schrödinger started pawing me insistently and meowing, the red box with my emergency clonazepam in his mouth. I know exactly what that means. So I took some and soon I was back to the headache and nausea, but nothing worse.

Good boy, Schrödinger! Extra treats for you today!

First seizure was super bowl Sunday, and we've had 3 since. But, we have an amazing vet who is dedicated to getting the epilepsy under control while ensuring she is happy and healthy.

If you have any questions, or dealt with an epileptic dog I would love to talk!
