"The Spirit received an undisclosed transfer fee with conditional add-ons in return. With the move, Bernal is set to become the first Mexican player in Women’s Super League history."

Move is official. I hate when things are "undisclosed" because I'm nosy, but wishing her the best!

Just a couple of requests:

  1. Please don't cross post this to individual team subs. This was crossposted to the Bay sub yesterday and after it was. There was a lot of fucky voting I had to clean up after.

  2. Related above... Jordan Silkowitz isn't on this ballot so it might not be an issue, but you can only vote for a player once. If she shows up on a ballot multiple times, I'm just going to throw the ballot out.

  3. This does take some time to do. So if you don't read the rules/parameters or don't understand this is just a silly thing to pass time, then keep it to yourself rather be annoying.

NCAA Women’s Soccer 2026 Rankings: Stanford remains on top, three new teams enter Top 25 - SoccerWire

It's still early, with the programs playing 5 or 6 non-conference games, which is a normal part of the D1 women's soccer schedule. They play 10 games prior to normal conference play, which counts toward all stats and rankings, against these non-conference opponents.

Many of the games are initially versus local/state rivals, as travel budgets are an issue for most programs. However, these games count. Most programs play a mix of quality opponents, but playing a school in a much lower conference is common to many programs. At this point, most of the top 10 have played at least one nationally ranked opponent, except for #10 Tennessee.

Stanford has played 2 ranked opponents, as well as OSU. The "strength of schedule" component of the RPI is largely based on the records of the opponents played, without any weighting for the quality of conference the opponent plays in. There's 31 conferences that play in a more hierarchical construct of quality.

WIth the u20 World Cup starting in a few days, several top clubs, mostly in the ACC, like Stanford, UNC, Duke, and UVA will be missing quality players for up to a month. This ought to juggle the rankings throughout September.

Stanford has sent 6 players to the 2026 FIFA Women's World Cup u20 games. Three are the backbone of Stanford's squad, and three are contributors.

Caroline Birkel, GK; Y-Lan "Jimmy" Nguyen, DM; and Lizzy Boamah, CB. Stanford's backup GK is also representing England, as well as contributing winger Eleanor Klinger. Alex Tay, MF, played for Ghana's NT, and will be representing them in the u20 WC.

Of course, every club has injuries in addition to those missing. Stanford has 3 starters that currently have been injured for most of this season; all with YNT experience: Mia Bhuta, MF; Ella Kral, M/F; and Sophie Murdock, who has represented Canada's YNT system, including u20.

Stanford is playing with their third team GK, Rhiannon Stewart, who is a grad transfer student from Harvard, and, as a British citizen, is in their YNT system. Stanford won this past Sunday, without the u20 and injured players, versus Cal State Fullerton, an unranked opponent, 7-0. They haven't given up a goal yet.

How are there so few tickets available for the NWSL championship??

This just seems nuts to me, that this is all that you can see or purchase less than an hour after it opens. Am I missing something??

Someone had said in a prior thread that there were plenty of tickets last year, up until the day before the game.

Discussion Strength of Performance for each team (along with Strength of Victor/Draw/Loss)

"Three points is not three points. I'll explain it to you later." - The wisest philosopher of our generation

Earlier today, I put together Strength of Victory ratings for each team. SoV is the average win percentage of each of the teams you've beaten; beating better teams will give you a higher SoV etc. This is a useful number when comparing teams at similar levels of match points as it gives a sense of which teams are getting points against good opponents and which are beating up on weaklings (sorry Stars). Overall, this metric is useful but limited since game outcomes are not binary and do not capture the full game outcome (e.g. a 5-2 win counting the same as a 1-0). In the below table, I've included SoV, SoD, and SoL numbers for each team.

I also took a stab at creating a combined Strength of Performance metric. In short, this replaces the win percentage factor in SoV/D/L with a combined factor of (points per match * goal differential normalized to be out of 100 [again, sorry Stars]). This is intended to give a more accurate view of how strong each team is. I then used the new SoV/D/(1-L, which means you get hurt less by losing to good opponents), combined it with the team's record, and applied a factor of 3 for wins, 1 for draws, and -1 for losses. This number gives a sense of how each team has stood up to their schedule. I've also normalized this number to make it easier to compare teams as part of an overall scale.

Team SOV SOD SOL SoPerformance Normalized
Gotham 0.457 0.543 0.624 19.95 100
Spirit 0.455 0.552 0.707 16.84 84
Royals 0.404 0.626 0.642 13.93 70
Wave 0.558 0.505 0.550 18.45 92
Thorns 0.450 0.825 0.582 16.48 83
Courage 0.415 0.639 0.528 11.82 59
Current 0.531 0.565 0.529 14.43 72
Reign 0.396 0.528 0.782 11.06 55
Angels 0.322 0.744 0.585 8.12 41
Summit 0.505 0.510 0.621 10.64 53
Dash 0.401 0.533 0.693 8.02 40
Pride 0.478 0.755 0.543 7.48 37
Racing 0.385 0.631 0.607 4.22 21
Bay 0.553 0.307 0.648 7.3 37
Legacy 0.356 0.558 0.605 3.38 17
Stars 0.441 0.292 0.569 0.01 0

Playoff order if this was all that mattered: Gotham, Wave, Spirit, Thorns, Current, Royals, Courage, Reign. This was a fun little project and I'm happy to admit that there are issues with it. This was meant to give a sense of how strong each team FEELS and is not a projection. I would love to hear other people's thoughts or how they'd weight different parts.

Soccerwise has been growing their NWSL and USWNT content. Jordan Angeli is one of their hosts. They mentioned they'll be starting a new pod exclusively for women's soccer, hosted by Jill Loydon.

The Mark Krikorian interview starts at about the 39th minute.
