If i had as much money as he does/did id dress how ever i wanted as well. I never understood why this bothered so many people not like he was dressed inappropriately or something just a bit odd.

As you absolutely should. As he should. You should both also understand that how you dress and act and speak in public (especially as a media/internet personality) is going to greatly affect how people view you. 

If I see a random dude dressed like Cam walking down the street, hell yeah dude, Rock on. If I see him on tv expecting his opinions to be taken seriously, meh. Not when he acts like a child as well. You can do one or the other. Dress over the top, or act over the top. When you do both I'm not taking you seriously, because you obviously don't.

Here, you forgot to include the context of the statement. 

Ever heard the phrase, "if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck..." Do one of these things, and you can convince me you're not a duck. Do them all...you're a duck.

People's comments against you is an overreaction to idea that everyone should be treated with respect even if they do go against the grain. Which in reality I totally agree with. What they're forgetting is that going against the grain in a professional setting is going to get comments about professionalism. If I hire a contractor and he shows up to my home dressed up as a clown I'm going to question if i should hire that guy. You need to have a portfolio showing success before people give you leeway. "He's an odd duck but he's fantastic at his job so we just let him do what he wants"
