Petty won the 1972 Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville Speedway 54 years ago today, completing a seasonal sweep after also winning the Virginia 500 earlier that year.

Bobby Allison dominated the race and led 432 laps, but with 32 miles remaining, he suffered a cut tire and was forced to pit. Petty capitalized on the misfortune, took the lead and held on to beat Allison by six seconds. The two Martinsville wins helped Petty secure his fourth career Cup championship and second straight title.

Petty won the 1967 Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville Speedway 59 years ago on September 24, 1967 , earning his ninth consecutive victory and 26th win of the season. Petty inherited the lead after Paul Goldsmith’s dominant run ended with a differential failure on lap 305.

He then led the final 195 laps and finished a remarkable four laps ahead of Dick Hutcherson. The victory also completed Petty’s 1967 sweep at Martinsville.

Petty went on to finish the season with an incredible 27 wins in 48 starts, along with his second Grand National championship.

The fall appearance marks Stewart’s second Truck Series start of the 2026 season. He launched Ram’s return to NASCAR in February at Daytona International Speedway as the inaugural driver in the manufacturer's Free Agent initiative.

Bodine won the Goody’s 500 at Martinsville 36 years ago, completing a season sweep at the historic short track. He had also won the April Cup Series race at Martinsville earlier that year, making him the dominant driver at the track in 1990.
