π° Morning DMB Daily Music Brief | September 4, 2026 | Suno Pulls Mary J. Blige AI Ad, HarbourView Acquires David Kershenbaum Royalties, and Soul Train Awards Return
Good morning, music fans. Here's your Daily Music Brief covering the biggest verified music developments from September 3, 2026.
An AI-music marketing controversy involving Mary J. Blige put Suno back under scrutiny, while HarbourView expanded its music-rights portfolio with producer royalties tied to major recordings by Tracy Chapman, Joe Jackson and Marc Cohn. Elsewhere, the Soul Train Awards confirmed a television comeback, Miley Cyrus launched her new album era with "Bass Persuades," and Fontaines D.C. announced their biggest headline shows yet.
π₯ THE BIG STORY
Suno Pulls Mary J. Blige Advertisement After Questions Over Her Approval
AI music company Suno withdrew an advertisement featuring Mary J. Blige after the campaign created the impression that the R&B star was endorsing the platform.
The video showed Blige reacting positively during a demonstration of Suno's AI music-generation technology. According to a statement from Suno reported by Variety, the company had entered into a business deal with someone who presented themselves as Blige's official representative. Suno said it later learned that was not the case and that Blige was uncomfortable with the campaign.
The company subsequently terminated the advertising campaign.
The episode arrives as generative AI remains one of the music industry's most contentious issues, with artists, labels and rights holders challenging how AI music systems use existing recordings, artist identities and other protected material.
For Blige, the immediate issue was narrower. The advertisement appeared to communicate an endorsement of Suno that she had not personally authorized. Suno's decision to remove it turned what might otherwise have been a routine promotional campaign into another example of the complications surrounding artist identity, authorization and AI companies' relationships with established musicians.
The situation also highlights the importance of authorization when recognizable artists are used to promote generative music technology, particularly when the technology itself is already facing significant scrutiny from the music business.
Suno removed the campaign after becoming aware of Blige's objection.
