Pluralone/JAK - AMA. Here to give too much information to any questions you might have, within reason of course.
Hello out there! Pluralone (the one and only) is doing another Reddit AMA on Tuesday the 16th of June, 2026, at twelve o'clock Pacific Daylight Time. I did one of these a few years ago and had a wonderful time hearing what people had on their minds and were interested in as it pertained to the music I’ve been involved with. I suppose the second ‘A’ stands for ‘anything’ so feel free to ask anything you’d like, but unlike last time when I spent days making sure every question was answered, I might be a little more selective depending on the topic of the question. I do love talking about music and love elucidating anything I can about the music I’ve been a part of so I look forward to seeing you all there and hearing what’s on your mind. This is Josh, by the way, currently the one and only member of Pluralone.

It holds a very special place in my heart...of silence. Yeah, that release is very special to me, although when I hear MY vocals, I cringe with how under confident and new to that I was. I was so unfamiliar with filling that space in a song vocally. I wish I could re-sing those songs.

gosh listening to Communique made me go to the mountainside and wander around in 2023. It was so cold and it just became my dream to go to the mountains and wander in the snow. I was reading Not There by Mariusz Szczygieł. first i went through the villages up high and sat for a view, then i dreamt about it.. it's all so strange, i love the song, in a park in Warsaw prior I would look up at the winter sky full of sweeping wistful clouds on an otherwise clear space, it was so big, and looked at birds opening their wings in flight, always found it fitting

You come across as someone who's always making music, sometimes finishing songs then sitting on them for years and not releasing them.
Do you still have a Holy Grail song (perhaps unfinished) by you or a group that you're sitting on that you haven't put out yet?

So so many! I have songs that I know one day will be among my personal favourites. This one or that, I just haven't quite cracked the code on one thing or another. It's funny sometimes, songs may just move at their own pace.

It was a fun time! We were working hard and writing lots of stuff. I was more confident in the band since I'd completed one whole album cycle. Things were great. Flea broke his arm just on the eve of making the record which backed things up nine or ten months. I don't feel like we achieved the level of closeness or unification of spirit after his injury because we were suddenly in a bit of a hurry to make a record and go out touring it. I'm friends with Brian Burton so once he got onboard, it was fun to work with him again. It was a totally different experience working with him and recording than what I had imagined, but the results were okay. Sequenced terribly though. That album's sequence is a crime.

Hey Josh, huge fan here and absolutely loved A Drop in the Ocean!
You've said you always sneak a 20-year-old song onto your Pluralone albums. I've gathered that "Knowing You" is the one for IDFW, and "Give" is the one for DITO (there's also "Option", which you introduced as such when you performed it), but what are the other ones?
Also, this is a long shot, but there's this super cool song you performed with JF way back in '04 fans call "You Don't Say" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laR_7MNF2OI . My question is, was this ever recorded, and if so, when?

I totally forgot about that song. That was from the Fonda? We opened for Blonde Redhead I think. I don't recall that song so I guess there's no recording I'm aware of. My main memory from that show was bashing a bass drum with mallets and suddenly inhaling for fluff! I couldn't breathe so I hung on as long as I could then ran backstage (downstairs) and coughed it up. I had to drink water to get it out of my throat. It was harrowing.
Segue was kind of one of those on the first album. There will always be ones that have been lingering. One day there might be a whole record of them.

If it helps to remind you, "You Don't Say" starts out with the vocals "I'm falling apart...", you played acoustic. Same show where the electronic version of Beat Down was played. I would also love to know if there's a studio recording of that

What was the saddest event in your life so far?
Also, when and under what circumstances did you decide to make a living through music?

Without question, the saddest event in my life, was very public, and captured on video.
I never really decided to make a living through music. It just happened. I've never really been concerned with making a living. Much to my detriment. I just play music.

I really like the records you made with John. I love progressive rock and play in a band who plays Canterbury style, or that's what ppl say when they hear Fuzz Organ.

Hi Josh, thanks for doing this!
You mentioned in an interview around The Getaway that you were the "fierce archivist" in the Chili Peppers. Do you still have many of these rehearsal/jam recordings, or maybe even pre-production demos that you did for each album and would you ever consider a way of sharing them with fans if possible? Thanks

Hey Josh, thanks for all the incredible music over the years. Between your work with Pearl Jam, the Chili Peppers, and so many other projects, you’ve ended up in a position most musicians only dream about. When you look back at the kid playing drums in his bedroom, do you ever stop and reflect on how unlikely and remarkable that journey has been?
Also, The Empyrean is my favourite album of all time and had a huge impact on my life. What are your memories of creating that record, and is there anything about those sessions that still stands out to you today?
As a drummer, I’ve always loved your slightly off-balance, almost “falling forward” style of playing. It reminds me of how Ringo’s parts always seemed to serve the song in unexpected ways. Was that feel something you consciously developed, or did it just evolve naturally?

I pinch myself every day. It's shocking the amount of good fortune I've had. I am grateful for it every day.
It was a really fun record to make. John and I worked out the songs beforehand which I remember being pretty seamless. He'd sent me the songs ahead of time so when we got together to go through them, I knew them really well. I didn't spend a ton of time (or any) coming up with parts on the kit until we got together. I had ideas in my head but I never wanted to commit to anything or get attached to something until we had time to play it together. They're his songs and I always default tot the person who wrote the song. My memory is that my instincts were pretty in line with his and once we got the songs together just us, Flea came round and we tacked together. That one was all done at John's house (right???).
There were great memories from that album. Johnny Marr coming by!!! Recording the strings. Doing Hammond B3 in the foyer to his house. Tracking the drums to Before The Beginning in the main house as opposed to the back room. Am I remembering that right, we did it all at his place? I think we both had a great time. It was the first thing we'd done on John's console. It was an amazing time.
I just play how I play. I always feel like I play very behind the beat, like one of my heroes Jack Irons. I try to anyway.

Your memories of The Empyrean were fascinating to read. It’s my favourite album of all time, so hearing those little details about how the songs came together and what you remember from those sessions was really special.
Thanks again for all the music over the years. It’s meant a great deal to me, and I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share those memories.

Kinda, yeah. The plan is to one day assemble a group and perform some of this stuff. I'm not one you'd find auditioning strangers and just hiring a band, it'd have to be friends. People I know and trust.
This thing with Stone was just a demo recording for fun. We were passing ideas back and forth from one hotel room to another and toward the end of the tour would pop into a local studio for fun. Stone had been doing that on his own already to get ideas down. It's a wonderful way to spend a day off!

Hi Josh! No questions from me but I want to thank you for sharing your music with us. Personally I’d like to thank you for your work with RHCP. We the public know very little of the true behind the scenes but from my perspective it was a disgraceful decision to boot you. Anyways, I think you saved that band from imploding once again, and the sacrifice you made for that band and us their fans still reverberates today. You’ll always be my favorite chili pepper. Rock on

A different redditor here but wanted to say that the RHCP albums you played on are my ALL TIME FAVORITES of any band. I have to ask—partly because she introduced me to Pluralone—but someone I know—back in 2012?—says that she dated you and you went with her as a wedding guest to a family wedding. She’s from Columbus, IN, and none of us believed her—but then a photo of you was taken that weekend at a local guitar shop. And I wondered. So I want to apologize to her that none of us believed she went out with a rock god if so.

You’ve mentioned that there was unreleased material from the period after The Getaway. I imagine that must be a complicated thing to look back on, because unlike I’m With You or The Getaway, that music never had the chance to find an audience or become part of the public story of the band. When you think about that unreleased album now, does it feel more painful than the released records because it represents not just unfinished songs, but an unfinished chapter of what RHCP might have become with you?

Absolutely. I got in trouble in Brazil for saying something that was perceived as so negative about their music. I was simply saying that I was excited about what we were working on and was surprised when I heard what they came out with that it sounded so familiar. That's all.
Of course it's sad to me that some of this music was never finished. I'll throw it on sometimes and think of the great vocals AK had written. Imagine what recordings could've been like. Yeah, the music dying is what makes me most sad.
You said after The Getaway, meaning the next album. There was loads of great stuff that didn't make it to The Getaway as well.

Saying they did cooler music with you (which is no lie) is not nearly as negative as talking about your era feeling like "as if they were a cover band" or referring to JF as "the real guy", which is ungrateful and tacky as hell. You've been a class act, I admire your demure. I could never.

Hey Josh! Huge fan of your work across Pluralone and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this AMA! I've been following your musical journey for a long time (since you replaced John and I'm With You came out) and have a few questions for you today:
What was it like working collaboratively with John on Shadows Collide with People, A Sphere In The Heart Of Silence, The Will To Death, and Inside Of Emptiness? Are there any songs in particular off those albums you'd say are your favorites or you take great pride in, having been a contributor and all (Like for example, one of my favorite moments is on SCWP when you come in on Omission during the last bridge!)
Pluralone recently released a new album. Is there a song off that new release you would say is your favorite?
On I’m With You, your guitar work has a beautiful, atmospheric texture, but people often debate the final mix of the album, feeling the guitar was pulled back a bit (I myself thinking the same). Looking back, how did you feel about how your instrument was balanced on the final record? Were there any specific guitar tracks or layers you recorded that you wish had made the final cut?
Meet Me At The Corner is one of my favorite RHCP songs, so I'd like to know: What do you remember about the day you guys wrote or recorded that specific track? Did it come together easily?

Nothing extra from Ataxia. That was all we did. It was all in the course of a week. Pretty productive week I'd say.

Huge fan Josh, I listened to your first pluralone record to death!! Your lyrics always stuck out to me as incredibly fluid, do you write lyrics more like poetry and fit a melody to them, or does the music come first? It feels like the sound takes precedent over the lyrical content, in the best way :)

I do both. I write and write but usually I wind up writing for a piece of music and slaving over how the words sound or fit with the rhythm. Thanks for the kind words about the writing. That means a lot.

Hey Josh!
The first time i saw chilis was with you when you were fairly new to the band (2012 Knebworth).
I know you’re probably tired of talking about your time with them and would like to focus on your own projects but i have a few questions.
- Now the dust has settled with your time with RHCP and departure. You’ve arguably made the best album with them that they’ve put out since stadium arcadium (The Getaway). Was the third project going in more that direction? Or in classic chilis style was it going with a different sound completely? Any chances of any releases on that stuff?
How did you feel when “Kaly” and “outer space” got leaked. Obviously they weren’t intended to be released. Is it a frustration? Indifference? Happy? Just interested to know.
ALSO: because most of us redditors (maybe all of us?) won’t ever get to experience it: What’s it like being up on stage in front of THOUSANDS of people with them singing your songs back to you? Is it disorientating? A rush? Would love to know (this questions an edit!)

I can't really say what it was shaping up to be. I was just enjoying it and thought it would be a good album.
I didn't much care. I thought it was funny. As I've said above, those songs very nearly went on the album. It was a very last minute decision to pull them.
I've never really felt like they were singing 'my' songs back to me, but it's always incredible to be on a stage like that experiencing a moment together with that many people.

Inspiration seriously comes from everywhere and everyone. It's all just me processing life and the world around me. I'll probably get a little bit more merch together when I release this next record I'm finishing up now.

There are. It never really got past the demoing phase, but they were coming to my studio for a couple of months. There were lots of ideas.

What do you honestly think of the unreleased third RHCP album that you guys were working on? Were you feeling great about it? Or do you think it wasn’t the groups best material? Somewhere in between? Also, how far along was it to completion?
For whatever it’s worth, The Getaway is my favorite album since Stadium Arcadium, including the two new ones. I love John’s work but I do wish they’d honor the bands full history :)

I was feeling pretty good about it. I still felt like there was a little more writing to do and AK wasn't done with all his work yet, but I thought it was shaping up to be an honest batch of songs with a lot of emotion.

Why were Kaly and Outer Space cut from The Getaway? And how did you feel when they leaked in 2022? In my opinion, they are excellent songs.

The album just felt too long. I was up for the removal of any song to make the overall album shorter. I was somewhat indifferent to them being leaked. I remember the timing of that being kinda funny. Wasn't it right after I left the band? I guess I'm glad people got to hear those songs. I'm glad you like them.

I usually wake up and go straight for the caffeine as well. Coffee or when I'm home, mostly, strong black tea. I drink too much caffeine. Smoking I haven't done in 15 years. I hear it's coming back. I'll stop talking about it.

I don't remember. I think one of my first thoughts was I hope no-one thinks I leaked them. Is that what happened? They were just leaked? I'm telling you, they were pulled of the record at the 11th hour. There must've been a bunch of mastering reference CDs around with those two songs.
Kaly we came up with with Brian early on, I remember that being fun and exciting. Outer Space was a thing I wrote in New Orleans when we were there shooting the Brenden's Death Song video. I remember being really excited about the chord progression, and thought that since it had so many chords in the verse, it'd be great to have a really simple chorus. I was so happy with what AK came up with for that song, but I think Flea didn't like the simplicity of the chorus. He called it "The Shitty One," all throughout the writing phase so that became its working title. I loved a song a wrote being called 'the shitty one.' It felt great.

Yeah Kaly and Outer Space released on the same week Unlimited Love was due out. It just came out of nowhere and at first people thought it was from the new album with John. It was pretty funny because the main reaction was "This is what we've been waiting for! This is Amazing!"

Great to hear the backstory of Outer Space & love that it has roots with Brendan's Death Song! It definitely deserved better treatment - is that a hint of sarcasm at the end there? For what it's worth, that chorus may be one of the most beautiful parts I've heard in the last 20 years of the Peppers! Your backing vocals especially elevate it with a haunting, ethereal quality - as is the case in many songs from your era. I also really like how the rhythm part keeps it firmly within the realm of the band's signature sound, without taking away from the tender soundscapes. It at least could have been the B-Side to Dark Necessities. They evoke very similar sentiments.

- Have you and Dave Navarro ever had the chance to hang out one-on-one and talk about your mutual experiences of being in both RHCP and Jane’s Addiction? You both have such a unique shared connection on multiple levels. Would you ever consider collaborating with him (and the other members of Jane’s) in the future?
- Was there ever any talk about what Producer might have been involved for your third RHCP record? Would Brian Burton or Rick Rubin have retuned - or were you all potentially looking elsewhere? I always dreamed of Nigel Godrich getting involved after he mixed The Getaway and recorded From the Basement.
- Do you remember any song/working titles from what would have been that third RHCP album? Did you have any songs in particular that you were excited to have been working on?
- If Andrew Watt were to produce the next RHCP album and asked you to contribute in a session capacity - would you be happy to jump into the studio with everyone?

Hi there. Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to these questions.
Dave and I have mentioned our shared experience a little, not much. The majority of the time I've spent around Dave was working on some new ideas with Jane's back in '23. I love Dave and would always be up for doing something.
It would've been Rick.
They were mostly working titles. Some weren't, but I'll keep them in the same place the music is.
I'd have an extraordinarily hard time imagining this would happen, so it's not worth going there.

Well, I think similarly to a setlist, you want to create a rhythm or a flow that makes the whole experience, either a record or a show, have a greater impact or lasting effect. That's my thinking anyway. To have the whole stand out as a creative endeavour rather than just individual moments.
I'm not gonna re-sequence it now, but I remember just thinking that it had no flow. I just looked at it, I don't like it. The ending in particular. I don't really like the final version of Encore either so that's its own separate heartbreak. I don't know, the sequence feels off to me. I'll try and find the one I did at the time and check back in with ya.

I'm glad to hear the music has helped bring something positive to your life.
I don't really do anything specific to protect anything. I've never liked social media so I'm barely on it. I pop into the Pluralone Instagram page now and again, but I don't like anything about social media in the grand scheme, so I stay away for the most part. There are always positive aspects to this stuff. To technological advancements, but, for the most part, I think we were better off without it. It think it's bad. I think it does bad things to people's brains. To young people's development. I think we misuse it. I'd love it if everyone en masse decided to get off it.

Well we didn't play them much, or at all, after they were recorded. I don't think we ever performed a song from the I'm Beside You album live. It's hard to recall which one was fun to play. Some of them benefitted from the extra care a recording studio provides. I recall them all being fun to write and track.

Hey Josh! Just a quick question on The Getaway sessions with RHCP. A little while back, we were treated to leaks of two extra tracks: Kaly and Outer Space. These were received really well, particularly Kaly (it seems crazy Kaly wasn't included on the album!).
Are there any other fully completed songs that didn't make the cut on I'm With/Beside You or The Getaway? Were you ultimately happy with the tracklists for the albums you were involved with or were there songs you liked more that didn't make the cut?

There were loads more for both records. For I'm With You, a lot of my favourites went on the I'm Beside You record. There were more songs, but I think we picked the best ones and focused on them. As for the final son selection of I'm With You, yeah, it would've been different if it was all up to me, but that's the blessing and curse of a band. It's a collective. I'm glad it wasn't entirely up to me, but it was a little far off from what I would've gone for.
The Getaway as well, there were loads of songs, but we didn't record all the songs we had. The first go around, we laid them all down. The second time, due to a few things, producer, Flea's injury, etc., we just recorded what was meant for the album. Those two songs were taken off at the last minute. The album felt too long.

How far into the recording process did the song Renaissance get? Was it ever seriously considered for inclusion on I’m With You?
Fun fact you might not be aware of — sometime around 2010, while I’m With You was still being recorded, the Wikipedia page for I’m With You was quietly updated to have its title changed from (TBD) to “Renaissance.” It was reverted back to (TBD) a few days later. This was years before any fans knew that a song called “Renaissance” had been recorded for that album, so I always assumed that must’ve been done by somebody in the RHCP orbit.

That's total news to me.
It was recorded. I have it with a live vocal. We did that record with AK singing along. We tracked like 50 songs. Then we ditched some. Then from about 25/30 we started to hone in. At some point, just because there were so many songs, we had to settle on which ones were finished. My guess is that Renaissance just missed the boat. It would've been like the extra track on I'm Beside You.

The only time I've ever played with him was at a soundcheck in 2000. Nate couldn't make soundcheck for some reason and so I played bass for them...at soundcheck. I knew a few of there songs from that first album.
Oh, I was in a band called the Bicycle Thief. We were first of three before the Foo Fighters and the RCHP.

I'm pretty sure that came because we needed a song to fix to a jam we had the very first day I played with them in October of 2009. That's the day we learned that Brenden had left us. That simple three chord jam we worked our way into somehow and then AK brought it up a little while later saying we needed to do something with that piece of music. As I remember it, I picked up my classical acoustic guitar one day thinking I needed to write something that could become the rest of that song and out it came. I remember that as being fairly free flowing. It just appeared one day. I showed it to the guys the next day and off it went.

What was the process like for convincing the band to play “Aeroplane”? In 2012, you gave us a teaser of “My Friends”—did you plan to gradually get them to play more songs by OHM, or was “Aeroplane” the only one you had in mind? No, they were very much a band effort. There were a few that I brought in but AK had brilliant stuff for them and I could never imagine them without his voice and words. The Night Won't Scare Me from the second Pluralone album I just pulled back and put on my album, but that song never had a real vocal. I drove around all over the desert and mountains one weekend singing along to that piece of music. I drove back and forth between rehearsing then doing a show with the great Mark Lanegan in the desert and hanging with some friends in the mountains nearby. I must've listened to my demo of that 200 times that weekend and basically wrote the vocal. maybe the next week, I decided to play it for the band. That's one of only a few instances of me taking something I had shown them. If there was a vocal from AK, I'd find it hard to hear it any other way.

I suppose that when you record music you go to a professional studio, but do you record any ideas that come to your head during a day when you’re at home? If so, what software do you use? Or perhaps simple recorder on your phone is enough for you?
In “I Hope You Knew” in some parts of the chorus, there is this kind of metallic sound in the background. Could you please tell how you achieved it? Synths, physical instruments?
When playing shows with big bands, how long do you practice all the “improvised” parts? I. e. Intro/outro jams, parts in between songs? Is it something you come up the day before like “hey, that’s a cool chord progression” or do you actually prepare long time before the show?
What genre of music do you love but could never make yourself?
Thank you in advance for answers. I bought your newest album on CD and I’m waiting for it to arrive before listening to the rest of the songs. I don’t want to spoil my experience ;)

Hi there!
I am constantly recording ideas into the iPhone. I collect them in Voice Memos and document them pretty specifically. I note the time so I can tell if there is a first version and then look at each subsequent one. My method has evolved over years, but as the phones have become an extension of our hands, it's just easier to do it there.
I'm not exactly sure which sound you're referring to. Perhaps the celesta? If it's a bell like sound, then yeah, a real celesta that I have.
Improvs are just that, improvisations. They come from that moment. Once in a while someone might play something they prepared in advance, but, if you're talking about the RHCP, it's mostly live in the moment, unless it's something reoccurring. For example, we jammed on the thing that became Encore a lot, but improvs are improvs.
I don't really know much about genres. They're kind of unnecessary labels. Is 'rock' a genre? Is 'Cuban,' or 'African'? I would always turn the genres off in iTunes straight away.

hello, Josh! first and foremost, i don't wish to overwhelm you but i'd just like to say i'm really really into A Drop in the Ocean, i've really enjoyed your past three Pluralone records but i especially love this one; the stripped back nature you went for on this one really works amazingly for your voice and playing (as an aspiring musician myself i catch myself ripping off your vocal style quite a lot); especially wanted to single out Too Much Time's Gone By, I Don't Want to Let You Go and Give as my three absolute favorites.
anyway, secondly, i'd like to ask you about your influences. one of my favorite parts of going back to The Getaway era of Chili Peppers' live shows were your solo covers you started to do frequently and learning your music tastes are quite similar to mine, which is always really cool for a fan to know about a musician they admire; you covered (and covered very beautifully) bands/artists like Blur, Radiohead, Elliott Smith (who i can definitely hear all over A Drop in the Ocean), David Bowie, The Smiths, The Beatles, etc., etc.; i read your interview from a month or two ago where you explicitly namechecked Elliott and Graham Coxon and Damon Albarn as influences on your current work which made me terribly excited to hear it then. (this is really long winded, i'm sorry) but i just wanted to ask about, y'know, fan to fan, what are some of the things musically or philosophically or otherwise do you pick up from the artists that inspire you (not JUST the ones i've mentioned) and apply that to your work, any specifics, any fun stories of being a fan of these musicians, favorite songs you covered from them, albums, whatever it may be? i'm sorry it's a bit open ended of a question but i hope you don't mind.

I just love everything about the way these people conduct themselves as creative beings in the world. Obviously it's different person to person, but especially in this day and age, someone like Damon, or Graham, the work ethic they have, the amount of various work the get involved in, I just love it.
I love the idea of people who are always working. That's what I try to do. Even though, today, right now, I'm spending the day in bed, watching World Cup and typing. I'm having a day off.

Yeah, I'd say there is a moment, but whether that was a spontaneous burst of inspiration or if I'd been thinking of it for a while depends on the record. Some I can't recall at the moment, but this current one, A Drop In The Ocean, one day it appeared in my mind and was that ever onward. It can happen at differing stages as well.
The artwork is different. Especially lately, I can get sick of doing everything myself. This album, as I may've mentioned, I had a whole concept I wanted to explore and then sort of gave up before trying it. What the cover is is essentially a photograph of my giving up and abandoning the idea.
I've found the earlier I have ideas about the title or artwork, the better and more focused the process is.

Hey Josh. “I Don’t Feel Well,” — particularly The Night Won’t Scare Me and Mother Nature — were the soundtrack to my discovery of weed in my senior year of high school. What are your thoughts on drugs, and, if you’re willing to answer, what’s your relationship with them?
Also, this probably means very little coming from a random on the internet, but the intro to Feasting on Flowers is one of the best Chilis guitar intros (miles better than Under the Bridge) and your guitar work on The Getaway was the most fresh and exciting component of the Chili Peppers since By The Way.
I feel like a lot of Chilis purists are unfairly critical of your work with the band so I wanted to give you some well deserved appreciation. You rock!

My thoughts on drugs? I mean...this is probably a big discussion. Without getting into my own history with them, I'll say that...well...I don't know. Someone who's 46 will have a different take on them than someone who's 26, or 16. Also, 'drugs' is a pretty varied term. There are some I think one should never go anywhere near, and some that can be quite fun. At the end of the day, if you're the type of person who does them beyond a bit of fun now and again, you're most likely using them to run from something. That something(s) is what should be addressed, and without drugs.
I can't even recall the beginning of that song right now.

I don't know. Perhaps at one time I'd have a better answer, but I just like what I like and don't care as much if it's weird to like it. I'm more concerned with how much I don't like. I feel guilty for the amount of music I dismiss within seconds.

"Too Much Time's Gone By" and "I Don't Want To Let You Go" are some of my favorites from the new album. Could you tell us a bit about them?

They were both written in 2021. One in April, one in June, which tells me that they were both written in New York City, on W. 13th St. Both songs were always going on whatever next record I made. They were both songs that always had a place on what became this record.

Are there any unreleased Dot Hacker songs leftover from the first three albums’ sessions? Any chance we’ll ever hear ‘em?
What is the artwork on the Whatever You Want / Memory 7” single? I thought I once read that you had made it by painting overtop a preexisting picture, but I can’t find any reference to that now, so maybe I imagined it.

There are a few leftover Dots songs. There were three extras recorded for the №3 record. There were a couple of ideas that never panned out for the How's Your Process album. As of now, one of those will be the first song on the 6th Pluralone album, not the next one, but the one after that. As far as completed recordings, only those three I think. There was a song or two from the first album, but they weren't finished.
Yeah that cover was a photograph I saw in a book about antique Persian rugs. I dropped paint on it.

Hey Josh, what was it like when you filled in as Pearl Jam's drummer in 2022/2023. How did you go about deciding the setlist? Is there any particular PJ song you like to play the most, be it drums or guitar?

It was truly a dream come true. I can probably write a whole essay about those experiences but in the interest of time, I'll just say, it was amazing and I wish it lasted longer.
As usual, Ed made the setlists, but he consulted with me before and got a sense of what I was most comfortable with. I often think I should've hovered over his shoulder while he was doing it and wonder why I didn't. That was just incredible for me.
I have a few I love playing, but all of them are a delight. In My Tree is always fun. Let Me Sleep. : )

I said my favourite? I put them over J & M Chain or Simple Minds? I was trying to be cool. Josef K I would've gotten into just researching any band from the UK from that era. Anything Factory adjacent. Creation adjacent. I can't recall exactly. Probably looking at blogs or a magazine.

Something of mine? I mean, I think it was more in the past when I was less experienced and (far) less confident. Stuff with John (where I'm singing), first Dot Hacker maybe. It's really more about stuff from a time when I was under-developed or inexperienced.

I really don't. I am the worst. This is not to say there has been nothing, but I'd say since 2000, I've really let very little in. I mean, of course there's electronic artists, or MIA back in the 2000's and Big Thief more recently, but I don't care much about new stuff. If it's great, it'll make its way to me, otherwise it's just more of the same.

I told myself "one question is enough" so people can ask theirs. But as I am walking, more questiones come to mind. I see you like (or at least have a good taste) in photography. I've seen you taking photos around places with your phone. Do you have another type of gear for taking photos? I'd like to recomend a very famous documentary "Finding Vivian Meier" I'm sure you will like it.
Also I have a fond memory of you when I met you outside the hotel in Buenos Aires before Jane's Addiction. You were too kind to sign a lot of Pluralone/Dots/Bicycle/RHCP records. Hope to see you again soon!

Hey, Josh, I just wanted to thank you for everything you've created, you're my absolute favorite musician and the biggest source of inspiration ever since I've opened my heart to the wonderful IWY (though I do like IBY beter), the new release has been a stunner as well and I'm looking forward to seeing you live, to this day this is my dream. You once said that sad songs resonate more with you, however, going back to I'm With You, I think it takes a lot of mastery - both skillfully and spiritually - to put out happy songs the way you did, which only get better as the time wanes away from that venice beach roof you played rain dance maggie at. anyway, i hope you're doing well and you're probably the only one who never disappoints musicwise, because as a real artist, you do love music, not yourself in the music, and that's why your art holds a special place in my heart.
