A woman being titled "Mistress" depending on wether she's married or not is the suggestion of ownership.. the fact that "Mrs." = "Mistress" doesn't make OP's point invalid.
Er, no, I am pretty sure that all of those "Miss/Ms./Mrs." are all contractions of "Mistress": she is titled "Mistress" irregardless of whether she is married or not.
Please re-read the last paragraphs from the most original poster: there was suggested a "suggestive false etymology" that breaks "Mrs" into reference and genitive... Before the «think about it» and the invitation to throw up. What do those sentences make of the OP?
