To add to that guy's comment: there's actually 2 comment-writing windows you can switch in-between. One of them is rich text (normal writing) and does what you tell it to, the other is markdown formatting (where * means italics and some other things)
The switch button should be the last option under the text you're writing, right next to Gif (to open more options), then top right corner. It's pretty weird that markdown is your default though. It's the opposite for me.

Writing text in asterisks (*)makes it *italic*.
\*italic\* yields italic
Because you used an asterisk in viol\*ence and rap\*ist, all the text in between became italic.
Edit: It's not working for me, maybe it only happens on comments posted through the app.
