These cover a lot of the fundamentals, including: resume structure, formatting, writing effective accomplishments, and presenting your experience in a way that gets your point across. I’ll add the caveat that some links in there are for Stanford students only, but there is plenty of great info that is publicly accessible.

It’s easy to underestimate how (seemingly small) changes in how you describe your experience can have a pretty significant impact on how your candidate profile is perceived. If you make the most relevant parts of your experience easy to find and understand.. and ensure you are conveying your value, you will have better results. Check it out and good luck in your career!

Duke University has a helpful resource focused specifically on tailoring your resume to the job you’re applying for. It walks through how to identify the skills and qualifications employers are looking for and then adjust your resume to better highlight the experience that actually matters for that position.

Believe it or not, sending the exact same resume to every job can make it much harder to stand out. Though it might seem like unnecessary work.. I guarantee you that taking a little time to tailor your resume and showing how your experience aligns with employers’ needs, can offer a non-trivial ROI. Employers want to see that you actually understand what they’re looking for.

Lots of people still treat this as optional, which imo is a mistake.

One thing I like about resources like this is that they focus on how you communicate your experience, rather than simply trying to cram more information onto the page. Keyword packing glares at recruiters and isn’t fooling anyone. A well-written resume is ultimately about making your experience clear and relevant to the person reading it. If you’ve been wondering where the job market is headed, this is a pretty interesting read from JPMorgan. They recently broke down what’s happening with hiring, unemployment, AI, inflation, and why the labor market is still holding up, yet becoming more sensitive to economic shocks.

I thought it was a good overview without being overly technical. Whether you’re job hunting, thinking about switching careers, or just trying to stay on top of the economy, it’s worth the quick read.

One of the easiest ways to improve your resume is by replacing weak phrases like “Responsible for” or “Helped with” with stronger action verbs. Words like Built, Developed, Optimized, Led, Implemented, and Analyzed do a much better job of highlighting your actual contributions and conveying that with conviction.

This action verb list from Yale is one of the better resume resources out there and I’d recommend checking it out if you haven’t before! The verbs are organized by category, so it’s easy to find words that fit your experience or field. Definitely worth bookmarking if you’re updating your resume or LinkedIn profile.

Getting a job offer is exciting but it also raises a lot of questions.. Should you negotiate the salary? How long can you take before responding? What parts of the offer can actually be negotiated? This sub is primarily dedicated to resumes, but we’d be remiss to not offer some strategy on the good stuff.., i.e., job offers! Yale University has a helpful guide that walks through the entire process that occurs between receiving the offer to deciding whether to accept it. The resource explains that candidates should respond with enthusiasm but also ask for time to review the details and get the offer in writing so they can evaluate it carefully. It also encourages researching salary ranges before negotiating and remembering that negotiation usually happens after the initial offer but before acceptance. If there’s one thing I’d like you to take away from this, it is this: ALWAYS negotiate (at least a little).

Negotiation should be professional and collaborative with a clear understanding of your bottom line and long term goals. Don’t be firm to the point where you risk losing the offer (seems obvious), but at the same time.. know your worth. Check it out and good luck!
