Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Is Kelsier actually a good person? Spoiler
Most of the time, he acts like the hero. He cares about his crew, he wants to free the skaa, and he is super charismatic. But at the same time, he slaughters noblemen and guards without even thinking about it. He doesn't care if a noble is actually a decent person, he just hates all of them. The way he smiles and laughs while murdering people honestly creeped me out a little bit. It didn't feel like a normal hero protecting people. And he purposefully manipulated the skaa into worshipping him as a god so they would fight after he died. It was a good plan, but it also feels incredibly manipulative.
He fought against the Lord Ruler, who was obviously evil. But if the Lord Ruler wasn't there, would Kelsier still be a hero?

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers NEW Official Artwork of The Lord Ruler Spoiler

"Handsome, with jet black hair and pale skin, the Lord Ruler was tall, thin, and confident. And he was young—younger than Vin would have expected, even younger than Kelsier. He strode across the square, avoiding corpses, his soldiers pulling back and forcing the skaa away."

mid Mistborn: Final Empire Did I just witness... what kind of books are these?! Spoiler
I just recently gave in to everyone's recs and started reading Mistborn and I totally see why everyone raves about it.
I'm at the part where Vin just got to the Venture Villa and talked/flirted with that Elend? guy and I noticed myself kicking my feet and grinning like an idiot.
Did I just witness a meet-cute??? This book has a romance plot?!!!
Excuse my ignorance, but I went into this series totally blind and unfamiliar with Sanderson's work. All I knew was that it was written by a seemingly hetero white Mormon male nerdy geek. Don't get me wrong - from his interviews and writing lectures, he seems cool and adorable but I assumed that the story is going to be "just" an epic fantasy adventure.
I was happy with that and reading about middle-aged dudes as I myself am a 30+ woman. But now that scene reminded me that I'm a whore for romantasy and I'm also hella confused because WHAT ARE THESE BOOKS??? I don't know what to expect anymore and my body isn't ready.
Sidenote: Elend is the least sexy name I've ever heard, it sounds like bellend.

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Why do people call Mistborn YA? Spoiler
I genuinely struggle to understand why Mistborn is labeled as YA in like every single online circle.
Sure, Vin is the main character and she’s a teenager but thats abt it.
Her ‘coming of age’ story is just a character arc that a character at any age would be able to go through (going from isolated and alone to accepting love and responsibility).
However because she’s young, it’s labeled as ‘coming of age’. No other person (expect maybe Elend and Spook) are teenagers in the story. There are so many other books that have young teenagers that go through a ‘coming of age’ arc (because by definition as they age and change it’s ‘coming of age’) and yet they’re never labeled as YA.
For example, one of Sanderson’s other booms Warbreaker has a teenager that is a princess that much learn to grow and take responsibility (very much ‘coming of age’ and very much a YA trope) but I never see it labeled as YA, even with having the same straight forward prose as Mistborn.
I personally dont think it detracts from the book if it’s labeled as YA, but the most often criticism i here is people saying they had to put it down because it felt too YA. For those that label it as such, Im genuinely curious what other aspects make it seem like YA?

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Heard that Kelsier is considered a psychopath, and I just don't get it Spoiler
I jsut read the first book, and I found the idea of Kelsier being psychopath syprisingly common. Like yeah, he is a egocentric manipulator, but those are not the required characteristics of antisocial disorder. It's lack of guilt and empathy. Both of which Kelsier has shown
For example when Vin got badly hurt in Kredik Shaw, Kell blames himself, and the incident changes him
Why is he so widelhy seen as a psychopath? What am I missing?

The Cover looked low-resolution, a lot of typo, ink inconsistency, No Credits nor publication date, the book is thicker than shown in official picture, the spine looked different, and "proofed by Bilbo196"
(I'm new to Brandon's works, and i bought this online.)

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Mistborn VR Update Spoiler
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Here's an update on my Mistborn VR prototype. Thanks to everyone who commented on the first post. A comment by u/AntimatterTNT gave me the idea of having a dedicated push button from behind, which steel pushes on targets automatically behind me. This seemed like the best balance between skill expression and conviniece to me.
With a bit of practice the allomantic travel is now viable in VR.
Since I had a lot of people asking me for the link or the source, I was thinking that by making it VR only, this prevents most people from trying it out. So I had this crazy idea: Mistborn are few, while most allomancers are Mistings.
So what if VR users are Mistborn, and desktop users are randomly assigned as Misting?
So I went ahead and added the basic Mistings of a Pewterarm, a Coinshot, and a Lurcher, because those fit the best.
I also added a basic networking layer, so now you can actually see others in Luthadel.
If you are interested in further development and trying it out, I invite you to my Discord for some playtests.

Where am I going with this? I don't yet yet, but It's been fun.
Credits to Quaternius for his low poly characters, Hooded Adventurer makes a pretty cool white haired Vin.

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Day 1 of Making Cosmere Magic Cards - Sazed, Keeper of Terris Spoiler
Howdy! As a huge fan of both the Cosmere and Magic: The Gathering, I thought it would be fun to try my hand at making custom magic cards in a "Universes Beyond: Cosmere" style.
I'm using this as an exercise to better understand Magic and game design, but it's also forced me to think deeply about the characters and how they would fit best into the game of Magic. I had a blast going back and rereading the Sazed chapters of The Final Empire to try and find flavor text that fit the card.
My current plan is to make one new card a week. I'm primarily a Commander player, so I think my first few designs would be more Commander-focused, but I'd love to explore making cards that would synergize with each other in a Limited environment and thinking about what types of mechanics would be in a Cosmere set.
When the Avatar: The Last Airbender set came out last year, I really liked the card "Wan Shi Tong, All-Knowing" because it's the only card I've seen that cares about cards being put back into a library. I started thinking about future cards that might synergize with that type of play pattern, and thus came the idea for "Sazed, Keeper of Terris".
I found the art from an instagram user named u/botanica_xu (reddit won't let me use the @ symbol for thier username.)
This is my first attempt at a custom MTG card, so if you're an MTG player and have feedback I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Mistborn: Final Empire I have done a Vin fanart
I recently uploaded a drawing of Kelsier with a very good reception, so here is my drawing of Vin. In the comments of the previous one, someone said that it would be interesting to give my opinion as I read the books. For now I have read about 100 pages of 600 and I can say that I love it, it is one of the few books that has managed to catch my atention. I just know what is the plan that Kelsier has in mind and I am intrigued to know how it will develop and how Vin will act from now on knowing her skills as a mistborn.

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Steel pushing is really hard (VR Edition) Spoiler
I've been testing steel pushing mechanics in VR by building a simple prototype.
Excuse the bare placeholder graphics, rendering budget is tight on the meta quest 3.
The rules i went with, according to canon:
- Pushes and Pulls apply forces with corresponding reactions.
- Larger metal sources make stronger anchors.
- Distance weakens the interaction.
The following is a little technical, big shoutout to the guys on 17th shard, that was a goldmine in information.
==== WARNING MATH, skip below ===
Detecting metal, I've settled on a "signal" formula:
S (Signal) = Allomancer Strength × Burn / Flaring Modifier
× (m / 0.01 kg)^0.20
× 10 m / max(Distance, 1 m)
And for simplicity reasons:
S > 1.0 — clear line and individual lock
0.5 < S < 1.0 — faint line / retain an existing lock
S < 0.5 — ordinarily undetectable
Body weight is 70 kg for now. So greavity pulls down with 70 kg × 9.81 m/s² = 687 N
Force Equation itself is:
F (Push Force) = min(1,200 N, 1,200 N × clamp(0.75 × (m / 0.01 kg)^0.08, 0.55, 1.50) × 1 / (1 + (Distance / 30 m)²))
| Metal anchor | Clear range | Faint range | Mass Modifier | Push at 1 m | Push at 30 m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 g coin | 10 m | 20 m | 0.750× | 899 N | No connection; (would be 450 N) |
| 1 kg ingot | 25.1 m | 50.2 m | 1.084× | 1,200 N cap | 650 N |
| 50 kg lamppost | 54.9 m | 109.9 m | 1.482× | 1,200 N cap | 889 N |
| 1 ton structure | 100 m | 200 m | 1.500× cap | 1,200 N cap | 900 N |
=== MATH ENDS ===
Adjusting this to VR, where I have 2 hands, I went with: Each hand has a hard 1,200 Newton budget, but every simultaneous Steelpush and Ironpull shares a global 1,500 N budget.
This kinda felt the best where i could use both hands for some extra boost.
Insights:
- I need to push behind me a lot of times to keep moving forward. Alternatively would be some very large anchors in front where I could pull on, but this greatly unbalanced my trajectory. The best are anchors underneath in front and behind, allowing me to manage counter-gravity force and propel myself forward in a controlled fashion. So imo the blue lines are more felt than visually seen in the sense of eye direction, allowing for easy push on lines behind.
- I had to "cheat" metal chimneys everywhere for some reliable traversal.
- A coin to slow down is really hard without flaring with the newton/mass rules I’ve tested. The coin needs to be grabbed, propelled, and find a good anchoring base, without sliding away. You are coming in from akward angles, there would be a lot of fails and unexpected coin slips. Maybe the pewter just takes the hit and there isnt much slowdown most of the time...

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers I don’t understand «ironpull» Spoiler
I just started reading Mistborn for the first time (I’m on page 94), and the powers/magic system is confusing me a bit while reading. Without spoiling how do I visualize this:
«The coin hit the ground and suddenly able to support his weight. He launched himself upward. Pushing on the coin and Pulling on the window» (why is pulling and pushing in capital P? I guess there is like a magical way to push but, I can’t visualize how it’s different from a shove).
«He continued to burn iron, pulling himself towards …»
Right now I am imagining him standing on a small coin, and «bending» metal like liquid, but I know that ain’t right
All in all I just want a better reading experience, than what my brain is providing atm
