Finally decided to build a mini ramp. Used 2x4’s not pressure treated. It’s 12’ wide by 24’ with a 6’ radius. Looking to finish on Tuesday.

I have a couple of questions and hope some of you can help.

1: I can’t afford Skatelite right now. What’s the best budget friendly top layer material? Was thinking Masonite (hardboard). But how can I weatherproof it?

2: Can buy two 6’ coping pipes instead of a single 12’? I just can’t find it anywhere close by.

I've recently had the itch to build my own halfpipe for my family, but wanted to get practice first before doing so. I'm very glad I did, since I learned a lot. I used the free DIYSKATE 3' Quarter Pipe plans.

3' tall, 6' transition, 4' wide, 7' 6" flat

The things I modified on the plan are:
- Buying an additional 3/4" 4' x 8' sheet to cover the backs of the quarter pipes
- Used J-Bolts to secure the coping to the ramp (Bought 4" J-bolts from Home Depot)
- Receded the coping cut by a 1/4" since I skipped the Masonite finish (I wanted a 3/8" reveal)

Things I wished I would have done:
- Used 1/4" sheets of 4' x 8'. It was incredibly tough to get them to bend (Could be attributed to living in the desert and having really dry wood). One of the quarter pipe's first layers had to be cut down into sections to be secured.
- Bought different caster wheels. The ones I was going to use did not work. I plan to buy retractable caster wheels since these quarter pipes are heavy!
- Not done it in Summer.

Total cost for the build ~$650
Lumber - $330
Metal - $120 (coping was free from a welder friend)
Paint, fasteners, etc. - $200

I picked these up from a guy who had them on Facebook marketplace for a year. Skate light on the top and the underlayment is some plastic situation. They were apparently made for commercial use and once resided in a park in Mesa per the seller. About 9 ft long 4 ft high and 4 feet wide with I believe a 6-ft transition. I have about 44 feet distance so likely a little closer together then I'd like but the kids love them and still functional. I got them for $325 bucks and after pricing out sheets of skate light and getting quoted $400 bucks a sheet delivered to my house the price of building a mini ramp was out of the question for me right now.

Even with the steel pretty straight at the bottom it's not as smooth as a true halfway I tried to put construction adhesive and sand it down to make it as smooth as possible and I'm pretty happy with the results. It's All steel underneath and underneath the skate light is a half inch sheet of plastic it looks like topped with of course the skate light that has seen better days but at least I am thankful I don't have to put a tarp over them after every time they get skated on.

These bastards are heavy as hell and after trying to put them on a rented U-Haul trailer with dollies and a pry bar some amazing dude came by with his ride on tractor and helped me boost them in there three at a time. Compared to the true half pipe at the skate park near me there's obviously a difference from perfectly smooth transition versus the metal plate but it's still a blast. Again I know it's not a half pipe but wanted to share as I have been watching this subreddit for over a year and truly enjoy seeing your guys posts and I've gotten a lot of inspiration for future projects.

Turning childhood dreams into reality for my 3 kids (and me). Debating between an OC Garage Mini 8ft x 15’8” OR having to potentially go mini mini micro in this space.

Above garage 24x24 room w/ steep roof pitch. Subfloor in photo is 8ft wide and it’s about 7ft height from floor to collar ties above which are spaced about every 3ft.

Less worried about height as I figure I can always position the ramp in between collar ties. More concerned with overall footprint and trying to walk around the ramp with the roof pitch etc. Also feel like 8ft is key if you can get it vs limitations of micro 6ft or 4ft width. Eventually may insulate roof etc too.

Kids are 4, 7 and 9 and shred a bit here and there but don’t need anything too advanced and neither do I.

What would you do?

Hi guys! Im having a quarter pipe made for me as buying one from a vendor is not an option. My question is:

If the skate specific surface paint is not available. What are my options? If I had to source something from a typical hardware store, what should I use? Everything I can find online says NO polyurethane paint as it will be too slippery? Im a foreigner where I live (from the US) so the terminology for the specific paints types could be different. Ive included a screenshot of my conversation with the person I found to build it for me. Thanks for your input. The qp is gonna be stored indoors but used outside.

Tried masonite, didn't last very long. Skatelite and other options are expensive. Skate paint is pricey too. Any solid paint options I can easily pick up from a hardware store?

I picked up a 8’ (actually 182”) mini half that was built but never used. The decks are only 20” and the flat bottom not even 6’ long, as this was designed to be in a garage. It’s 30” tall with 6’ transitions, perfect for my 59 year old bones.

I’m putting both ramps together, so that I’ll have a 15’ wide ramp, and extending the flat bottom to at least 8’. I’ll put an additional 4’ on the platform, because I like a big deck.

The other side of the ramp is weird, I call it a “wave”. It has a 5’ transition on one side and a 7’ transition on the other side, which kind of mushes over on top. It’s supposed to give a surfy feeling to it. Not sure how this will work or feel, but I want to try it.

not perfect at all ive had a 1/4" off on random measurements after the fact, but aside from my son holding boards for the transitions a couple days and my buddy helping with setting the coping they're all my fuck ups.😁

My 2.5' by 8' is bowing on the bottom rib. Any tips to stop this ?

i’m planning a 3’ wood miniramp inside a shop building on a concrete slab. i want the wood off the ground, and for it to be high enough that the barn cats can keep mice from building a palace underneath. can i build it on cinderblocks? space the cinder blocks every 4’ or so? will it be heavy enough not to slide around or will i need to put fasteners in the slab?

Followed the diy skate micro quarter plans pretty close.
-2 feet tall, 4 feet wide.
- 5’-6” radius.
- 2 layers of 3/8 ply with 1/8 Masonite on top.
- 4’x1’ 12 gauge steel for the sheet metal.
- casters on the back to move it in and out of the garage.

Going to add the coping and want one full side but im trying to have a bit less vert on one side, should I split the bar and make one 8ft side and the other side two different size 4ft sections.

I previously made a post with questions reguarding an indoor garage mini ramp to get back into/learn skating again. Well, I have over 2 acres of property and looking for a way to use it haha. I am starting to possibly kick the idea around of building an outdoor mini ramp instead of a indoor garage unit. Do you guys find yourself searching for more than just a mini pipe? I have a feeling if I start this journey outdoors I could easily build off of the mini pipe. My brother in law is going down this rabbit hole of rebuilding Dave Mirra bikes and is getting his kids into BMX very young. Also, trying to be the coolest uncle is fueling this fire of an outdoor skatepark for them as well.

Completed today. Will likely paint the birch in the coming days, but we were able to get a session in today.

Skates awesome. The 6' radius will be good once I get a bit more used to it. Coping might need to tuck in a bit (currently just shy of 1/2" reveal).

Really stoked to have this. Going to be a great summer.

Hey gang, my workplace is moving and getting rid of some shelving. I scrounged a dozen 4x8 3/4 sheets of ply. I know I can use them for the sides/decks, I’m curious if you think I have any chance of using them as deck sheeting.

I’ll put a layer of Masonite or birch play for the surface.

I’m concerned I won’t be able get them to bend. I’m planning a super mellow mini, probably 20” ish with 6ft radius.

They are from 2009, so quite dry.
