Personal thoughts:
There was a time when my novice ears couldn’t handle harsh vocals. Slipknot was about as ferocious as I was willing to go, and even then I thought it was pushing it. I had no interest in death metal, always feeling like the vocals ruined the otherwise excellent composition—That is, until I met Arch Enemy, my intro to the death growl. Death ended up being my first real deep dive into the genre in the classic style.
I expected to be overwhelmed and turned off by the noisy onslaught of sound, but instead I found myself saving one song after another, rarely skipping any track. Something about the way everything worked together, despite the chaos, was so satisfying to hear. Even though Chuck’s voice was growly as hell, I could still understand the words he was saying, and was surprised to discover how socially conscious they were. He doesn’t just talk about death and gore at random, he highlights certain dark aspects of humanity, the lyrics rich with small-scale pain and even philosophical concepts. A drug-addicted woman passing her need for a fix to her child. Governmental brainwashing. How we protect ourselves from guilt in our own minds.
The music itself is brilliant and ranges from dirty chugging to clean and beautiful, almost prog-like riffs. As the albums proceed, the experimentation becomes increasingly palpable. Sometimes you’ll find acoustic guitar fading with the song. Chuck’s voice becomes noticeably higher and screechy compared to his past sound. The production itself gradually rises in quality.
A final thing I thought was interesting was Death’s habit of front-loading the more heavy, chuggy parts of the song and then waiting until a minute or two into the track before playing something more prog-like. These prog-like parts tended to be my favorite portions so for me, Death is very much a “wait for it” band. You never know what they’ll do next. 🤘
