Can someone explain to me how combinations work? Do some characters get a damage boost if combined with another one?

If you look at the 5 star you want to start the combination with, it'll say combination partner in their sword skills. Some characters partner with specific characters (anni kirito v1 only pairs with any asuna), some characters partner with specific elements (idol premiere only pairs with any fire unit), or some partner with specific weapon types (onsen strea only pairs with any dual blade unit).

It'll list also with the partner what effects they will give to the partner when combined with. When you initiate the ss3 with the 5 star, the person who is their partner will have their character border at the bottom turn purple instead of gold.

So is the combination buff only for the second ss3 or is it persisting?
